FYI

I attended this colloquium several years ago. It was a very eye-opening
experience even though I did not go into a career in science policy. I
highly recommend it if you have the time to attend!

Dear Colloquium alum,

An announcement for the 2020 AMS Summer Policy Colloquium is below. Please
share it with anyone you know who may be interested in learning about the
U.S. Federal policy process. We depend on our network of Colloquium alumni
to help interested scientists know of this opportunity!

As you all know, alumni from the program have gone on to some amazing
positions in government (including serving as staff in Congress and
executive branch agencies), academia, and the private sector. The
President's current science advisor and Director of the Office of Science
and Technology Policy (OSTP) is a Colloquium alum, as is the staffer at
OSTP who is working on the next National Climate Assessment.

The Colloquium is open to everyone. As in past years, we have support from
the National Science Foundation (NSF) that is primarily focused on enabling
graduate students to participate.

Best wishes,
Paul

*Registration is open for the 2020 AMS Summer Policy Colloquium*

The American Meteorological Society Policy Program is pleased to announce
the 2020 Summer Policy Colloquium, which will occur in *Washington, D.C.,
May 31- June 9, 2020*.

*Please distribute this announcement to those who may be interested in this
opportunity.*
The Summer Policy Colloquium is an intensive, ten-day immersion in science
policy focused on the Earth system sciences and their societal
applications. Each year roughly 35 Colloquium participants meet with
congressional staff, members of congress, leading officials from the
executive branch, and prominent policy experts. The cohort also works
through group exercises and policy simulations to learn about the interplay
of policy, politics, and procedure in the United States Federal policy
process.

Members of the cohort develop a solid foundation of understanding for
policy engagement and build strong professional networking connections. As
a result, the Summer Policy Colloquium is often a career-shaping experience
for participants. Alumni of the program have gone on to work in Congress,
the White House, executive branch agencies, and in prominent leadership
positions throughout the weather, water, and climate community.

Participation in the Colloquium is open to all but will be limited to 40
individuals. The deadline to register
<https://www.ametsoc.org/index.cfm/ams/policy/summer-policy-colloquium/register/>
 is *April 15, 2020*.

The national competition for support from the National Science Foundation
is open to graduate students from all universities, postdocs, and faculty
from HBCUs and MSIs. Those seeking NSF funding must apply
<https://www.ametsoc.org/index.cfm/ams/policy/summer-policy-colloquium/nsf/>
 by *March 20, 2020*.
