Good morning postdocs and graduate students,

There are some articles that might be of interest to you at the "Chronicle
of Higher Education
<https://www.chronicle.com/section/Home/5/?cid=UCHESIDENAV1>" and "Inside
Higher Ed <https://www.insidehighered.com/>" sites. Here are a few that
I've picked out for you that may be of help.

But first, message of the day:

This is a time of huge change and uncertainty, and we need - first and
foremost - to take care of ourselves. This means making sure that we are
kind to ourselves, relax our expectations, and connect with others and
support each other. Please reach out to your peers and others to check on
them and to help yourself stay connected. This is a hard time, and while
we have been focused on providing for our bodies, we also need to nurture
our souls. Also, please reach out to me or any of us in ASP if you want
support or need to connect with someone.

Here are the articles:
1. Resetting Your Research Agenda
<https://www.insidehighered.com/advice/2020/04/02/how-continue-push-your-research-forward-while-staying-home-during-pandemic-opinion>
Even while staying home during the pandemic, you can advance your research
through small productivity moves, writes Chrsitine Tulley.

*2. Don’t Forget About Graduate Students
<https://www.chronicle.com/article/Don-t-Forget-About-Graduate/248389?cid=wcontentgrid_hp_1b>
 *
Our labor sustains colleges’ educational mission. Now it’s time for
universities to sustain us. [This article might give you ideas on what you
might ask for in terms of relaxed deadlines and future support.]

3. ‘Nobody Signed Up for This’: One Professor’s Guidelines for an
Interrupted Semester
<https://www.chronicle.com/article/Nobody-Signed-Up-for/248298>

Spring 2020 Adjusted Syllabus - sent to one class by a professor.

   1.

   Nobody signed up for this.
   -

 Not for the sickness, not for the social distancing, not for the

sudden end of our collective lives together on campus
      -

 Not for an online class, not for teaching remotely, not for

learning from home, not for mastering new technologies, not for
      varied access to learning materials
      2.

The humane option is the best option.
   -

 We are going to prioritize supporting each other as humans
      -

 We are going to prioritize simple solutions that make sense for

      the most
      -

 We are going to prioritize sharing resources and communicating

      clearly
      3.

We cannot just do the same thing online.
   -

 Some assignments are no longer possible
      -

 Some expectations are no longer reasonable
      -

 Some objectives are no longer valuable
      4.

We will foster intellectual nourishment, social connection, and personal
   accommodation.
   -

 Accessible asynchronous content for diverse access, time zones,
      and contexts
      -

 Optional synchronous discussion to learn together and combat
      isolation
      5.

We will remain flexible and adjust to the situation.
   -

 Nobody knows where this is going and what we’ll need to adapt
      -

 Everybody needs support and understanding in this

      unprecedented moment.

Please feel free to share other resources that might be supportive via this
email list, including relevant Slack channels, articles, or community
building ideas.

Please take care,

Val
