Subject: [UCAR OppsList] UMASS, Amherst : Postdoctoral Research Associate,
Climate Research Center - Geosciences
To: oppslist at ucar.edu

*Job Description:*

The Climate System Research Center (CSRC, http://www.geo.umass.edu/climate/)
at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst serves to advance understanding
of the nature and causes of climate change, and the effects that those
changes have had on the environment. This research leads to a better
understanding of how the climate system functions. Its mission emphasizes
high quality climate research at an international level, the education and
training of student scholars, and outreach to the public through
interactions with the media and public lectures.

Overview: The CSRC seeks a postdoctoral scholar to develop, refine, and
implement numerical models characterizing the land branch of the arctic
hydrological cycle. The overarching goal of the research is to advance
understanding of linked hydrological and biogeochemical processes including
the timing and magnitude of terrestrial freshwater export. The research is
part of a larger project supported by the National Science Foundation
focused on changes occurring within lagoon complexes at the land-ocean
interface in northern coastal Alaska.

Specifically, we seek a scholar with interests in 1) coupling of
intermediate scale and high-resolution models to simulate 3-D
hydrological-biogeochemical fluxes within watersheds in northern Alaska; 2)
improving model capabilities to account for dynamics controlling the
generation/leaching of DOC and photo- and microbial processing in rivers.
The successful candidate will engage the broader scientific community by
publishing peer-reviewed journal articles, presenting results at
conferences, and participating in working groups examining arctic water and
carbon cycle dynamics. The appointment will be for 2 years with potential
extension contingent on satisfactory performance and availability of
funding. Salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience.

*Requirements:*

   - Ph.D. in atmospheric science, biogeochemistry, ecology, hydrology, or
   related field.
   - Background in biogeochemistry or hydrology in the context of modeling
   and analysis.
   - Experience in development and application of
   hydrological/biogeochemical and/or land-surface models.
   - Demonstrated proficiency in scientific programming languages such as
   Fortran and C/C++.
   - Expertise in shell scripting and/or data languages used to analyze and
interpret large spatial data sets (Matlab, R, Python).
   - Ability to work well in a collaborative environment and interact
closely with other scientists and students working on related projects.
   - Ability to travel and work some evenings and weekends.

*Preferred Skills*:

   - Experience developing or applying aquatic biogeochemical models and/or
   remote sensing data sets.
   - Excellence as evidenced by publication of authored manuscripts in
refereed journals and presentations at scholarly conferences.
