Good morning,

Thanks to all of you who came to the small celebration yesterday for
postdocs at NCAR. We
appreciate all of your hard work and creativity!

If you get a chance, please thank a scientist or mentor who represented
your lab for having come, if there was one. It helps them to know that
their presence was appreciated.

About 15 people took advantage of getting a professional head shot taken by
our photographer, Caryle Calvin. She hopes to have them ready for you in
the next couple of days. We will aim to have another photo session in a
few months.

Below the photo is a letter from the National Postdoctoral Association
about the
purpose of this week and how to advocate for postdocs. Check it out!

Have a good day, and thanks again for your efforts in science at NCAR!

Being a postdoctoral scholar requires support from mentors and
institutions, to continue to work towards the dual role of providing
contributions to the research enterprise and career development training.
With the start of National Postdoc Appreciation Week

we are reminded of the importance of protected time for postdocs to explore
opportunities, network, and connect with fellow postdocs. In conjunction
with National Postdoc Appreciation Week, the Advocacy Committee has drafted
letters
<http://www.nationalpostdoc.org/link.asp?e=vsloan@ucar.edu&job=3080382&ymlink=160389606&finalurl=http%3A%2F%2Fwww%2Enationalpostdoc%2Eorg%2Fresource%2Fresmgr%2Fdocs%2FDraft%5FAdvocacy%5FLetter%5Fduring%2Epdf>,
providing a helpful reminder to the dual role postdocs hold, with
encouragement and ideas of how this can be achieved. We encourage you to
send these letters both within your institution and to key stakeholders.

As National Postdoc Appreciation Week begins, we ask that you post pictures
of each activity, and your postdoctoral scholars, showing your support for
their dual role. Please use the hashtags #NPAW2017 and #IAmAPostdoc, as
this will help us compile the pictures and develop a collage to show,
depicting postdocs not only contributions to the research enterprise, but
also participation in activities focused on career development.
