For any postgrads/postdocs interested in impacts and the use (or
non-use) of scientific information for policy and practice, the event
appended below might be of interest. Possible links:

Watershed Management in Yunnan, China: Deciding the Fate of the Tiger
Leaping Gorge

Tuesday March 27th, at 7 pm (refreshments at 6:30)
Boulder Public Library Auditorium, 1000 Canyon Boulevard, Boulder

Speaker: Ken Driese, University of Wyoming

In the Yunnan Province of China three major Asian rivers, the Salween,
the Mekong and the Yangtze plunge southward off the Tibetan Plateau,
carving deep valleys into the easternmost remnants of the Himalaya. In
one place the Yangtze is squeezed between two snow-capped peaks to form
the Tiger Leaping Gorge, a popular trekking destination for Chinese
and non-Chinese tourists and one of the natural jewels of the province.

But rapid economic growth in China is gobbling electricity and a
controversial plan to dam the Gorge for a hydroelectric project
highlights issues of watershed management in a non-democratic political
system. In this presentation Ken Driese, who recently spent a year
teaching English in the area with his family, will discuss this issue
and show photographs from the area.

The monthly Boulder Creek Watershed Forum series is sponsored by the
Boulder Creek Watershed Initiative, the U.S. Geological Survey, City
of Boulder and the Boulder Public Library. Refreshments are provided
in the Library's Canyon Gallery courtesy of Moe's Broadway Bagels,
Cafe Sole, and Breadworks. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and the program
begins at 7:00 p.m. For additional information, contact Sheila Murphy
at (303) 541-3023.
