Stratospheric Ozone Depletion: What's New and How Can It Link to Climate
Since its discovery in 1985, the ozone hole has been the subject of
intense interest by scientists, policymakers, and the public. The
background to this phenomenon will be briefly discussed, with a view
to providing an update on current understanding of Antarctic ozone
depletion. Recent studies have emphasized the key role of ozone in
cooling the Antarctic stratosphere, and the possibility of linkages
between changes in stratospheric and tropospheric climate has become
a matter of increasing scientific interest. Recent studies relating
Antarctic climate change to ozone depletion will be discussed, and
compared with the Arctic, as well as new information on other
latitudes, especially the tropics.
