One thing to factor in is that most external storage devices (USB hard
drives, flash memory) still come formatted with FAT32.  This can make
local backup and movement of large files challenging.

In principle, most of these devices could be reformatted with a more
modern file system.  But for example, my Windows machine at work is
locked down enough that it can't reformat anything.
