It's a good point that's been brought up quite a few times over the  
years. Worth looking at.

Re our discussion today, we've been using the Bagit technology for  
shipping data packages around in the context of digital preservation  
and Chronopolis. It provides hooks for additional metadata to be  
bundled into the shipping manifest, which could include version and/or  
DOI info, and provides for some integrity-checking. Might be worth  
thinking about as an example of a more sophisticated data-shipping  
mechanism, going beyond a wget-script. And then there are "holey  
bags" ;-)
