Dear Rachana, Luca, Bob, Ann, Gavin, Alex, Roland, Peter, et al.,

We (which includes all of you) are putting together a list of
requirements, justifications, and security risks for the modeling
groups that want to install a Data Node and/or a Gateway. Please see
the following site: http://cmip.llnl.gov/cmip5/data_node.html?submenuheader=2
.

The website is far from complete, we need additional information -
particularly security risks and implications for installing the
various software components. Using an example given from Alex, GridFTP
requires the ports, 2811 and 50000 - 51000. Why so many and what are
the ports used for? What is the description of the GridFTP Server -
Grid-enabled FTP server - what does this really mean? What is the
security risks for this component? As you can see, someone not savvy
about the components will have lots of questions. I've attached a
diagram (to be included in the document) showing the Data Node
components, we need to explain them in detail for anyone interested in
installing it. I would hope that we can do the same for the Gateway
and we will need to explain better, the relationship between the Data
Nodes and the Gateway and there connection requirements,
justifications and security.

We should try to complete this document as soon as possible. Perhaps
you can send me your input by Jan. 14th so that we can have this
information ready for the February candidate release.

Thanks and best regards,
	Dean
