<p dir="ltr"> </p>
<p dir="ltr">The Arctic Ocean is undergoing some of the Earth’s most rapid climate-driven transformations, with potentially far-reaching global implications. These changes span the ocean, atmosphere, and cryosphere, and projections indicate the Arctic could become seasonally ice-free by mid-century. Yet, current climate models, often running at low to medium ocean resolution, struggle to represent key processes controlling large-scale circulation, water mass properties, and mesoscale eddies. This limitation hinders their ability to capture the regional variability, timing, and magnitude of Arctic changes, leading to significant discrepancies and uncertainty in future projections, particularly regarding the large-scale impacts of Arctic transformation.</p>
<p dir="ltr">This postdoctoral project aims to advance our understanding of past and future changes in dense water formation across the Arctic, Nordic, and Barents Seas, in response to shifts in the cryosphere and air-sea fluxes. A key focus is assessing the downstream impacts on the subpolar gyre and the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC).</p>
<p dir="ltr">Work environment: The position is based within the Climate Modelling Group (GLOBC) of the CECI laboratory (Coupling, Environment, Climate and Uncertainties) at CERFACS, Toulouse. It is part of the multidisciplinary CLIMArcTIC project (climarctic.cnrs.fr), which aims to improve our understanding and projections of the regional physical and biogeochemical responses of the Arctic to climate change, and to assess the impacts of these transformations on local socio-economic activities and the global climate system. The successful candidate will join a collaborative research team and actively contribute to the scientific activities and exchanges of the CLIMArcTIC consortium.</p>

<p dir="ltr"><strong>Description of the work:</strong></p>
<p dir="ltr"> </p>
<p dir="ltr">The successful candidate will:</p>
<ul>
<li dir="ltr">
<p dir="ltr">Analyze historical simulations and climate projections from global models at low and high resolution, including ensemble runs.</p>
</li>
<li dir="ltr">
<p dir="ltr">Identify critical processes driving water mass transformations that produce dense waters in the Arctic and subarctic regions.</p>
</li>
<li dir="ltr">
<p dir="ltr">Track the propagation of these water masses into the Arctic Basin and their eventual return to the Nordic Seas and subpolar gyre.</p>
</li>
<li dir="ltr">
<p dir="ltr">Investigate how these processes and their timescales are altered by ongoing regional changes in ocean and sea ice conditions, particularly the "Atlantification" of the Arctic, which is expected to intensify in the future.</p>
</li>
</ul>
<p dir="ltr">This work will provide novel insights into the regionalized response of the Arctic to climate change and its global oceanic consequences, including potential disruptions to the AMOC. By improving our understanding of these mechanisms, the project will contribute to reducing uncertainties in climate projections and assessing the broader implications of Arctic change for the global climate system. </p>

<p dir="ltr"><strong>Required qualifications:</strong></p>
<ul>
<li dir="ltr">
<p dir="ltr">To have a PhD in physical oceanography or related field</p>
</li>
<li dir="ltr">
<p dir="ltr">To have experience in numerical modelling, analysis of large dataset, strong programming skills</p>
</li>
<li dir="ltr">
<p dir="ltr">To have published in peer-reviewed international journals</p>
</li>
<li dir="ltr">
<p dir="ltr">To have demonstrated good verbal and written communication skills in English</p>
</li>
<li dir="ltr">
<p dir="ltr">To have interest in working in a multidisciplinary collaborative environment.</p>
</li>
<li dir="ltr">
<p dir="ltr">Experience in polar oceanography or polar climate is an asset.</p>
</li>
</ul>
