Candidates are expected to have a good publication record, excitement to work on a new research subject, a high level of independence, curiosity, and creativity, and is capable in working in an international and interdisciplinary research environment. Fluency in English is required. Computational skills and programing experience with Matlab, Python, NCL, or Julia is desirable.

The successful candidate will work with Dr. Jiaoyang Ruan (IBS Young Scientist Fellow) and Prof. Axel Timmermann to explore the climate effects on the admixture of different human lineages (e.g., Homo sapiens, Neanderthals, Denisovans) in late Pleistocene Asia. To do so, the candidate will be using the latest version of Hominin Dispersal Model (HDM version 3) that was developed in the center over the past years. This partial differential equation model simulates the population density of different human lineages on a global geographic grid and accounts for dispersal (Timmermann et al. 2016, Nature), climate-dependent habitats and food resources (Ruan et al. 2023 Science, Timmermann et al. 2022, Nature), population growth, exclusive competition, and interbreeding (Timmermann 2020, QSR). The project will identify spatiotemporal Denisovan distributions, last refugia, and interbreeding dynamics with H. sapiens. The candidate will conduct a series of HDMv3 simulations with different climatic and demographic forcings to quantify the climate effects on past population admixtures. This project will involve collaborations with leading international experts in paleo-genomics.

The IBS Center for Climate Physics (ICCP, http://ibsclimate.org), directed by Dr. Axel Timmermann, is dedicated to advancing the understanding of natural climate variability, man-made climate change and their impacts on life on Earth.
