This project is to investigate 1) chronic variable stress as a modifier of subsequent traffic-related air pollution impacts on cardiovascular function and circulating biomarkers of cardiovascular disease risk and 2) impacts of traffic-related air pollution
on subsequent acute stress response. Using telemetry recordings of blood pressure and ECG, cardiovascular parameters to be determined include baroreflex sensitivity and heart rate variability. Circulating biomarkers that will be determined include serum
cytokines, C-reactive protein, markers of oxidative stress, and stress hormones. Traffic-related air pollution exposures will take place at the Caldecott tunnel near Oakland, California, about a 1.5-hour drive from Davis. UC Davis staff manage the tunnel
exposure facility.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
