<p class="Default"><b><span style="font-size:11.5pt">PhD scholarship: Aquatic carbon export from Australian headwater streams
</span></b><span style="font-size:11.5pt"><o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="Default"><span style="font-size:11.0pt">The Research Institute for the Environment and Livelihoods (RIEL) at CDU has received funding from the Australian Research Council to develop the first nationwide assessment of carbon export via streams and
rivers. We are seeking applicants for an exciting PhD project linked to this research program.
<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="Default"><span style="font-size:11.0pt">The PhD student will address the following question: How much of the carbon that was previously thought to be stored in terrestrial ecosystems actually leaks into streams and rivers? Through integration of high-resolution
river chemistry and gas measurements, remote sensing and statistical modelling, the student will generate new knowledge about the links between terrestrial carbon sequestration and aquatic carbon export. Expected outcomes include a refined estimate of the
net carbon sequestration potential across Australian biomes and seasons. The PhD student will undertake river flow and carbon measurements at ecosystem observatories of the Terrestrial Ecosystem Research Network (TERN). The student will combine these measurements
with geospatial data and machine learning modelling to extrapolate findings to the continental scale.
<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="Default"><span style="font-size:11.0pt">Initial activity will focus on the deployment of field instruments, field sampling and liaison with TERN collaborators. The field component will result in a multi-site, high-resolution time-series dataset of
flow, dissolved gases and organic carbon, which the student will use to derive estimates of aquatic carbon export at each site. They will then develop approaches to upscaling point measurements of aquatic carbon flux to the continent, with the overarching
aim to update the carbon balance for Australia. <o:p></o:p></span></p>
