<div><b>AREA OF RESEARCH</b>: Identification of Precipitation Type</div>
<div>Identification of precipitation type remains a major source of uncertainty for forecasters, particularly during winter. Research on this complex problem is critical as different precipitation types can be hazardous and wreak havoc on a number of sectors
including transportation and utilities. Because the thermodynamic profiles that lead to different precipitation types can be quite similar, making the identification of precipitation type all that more difficult.</div>

<div class="elementToProof">The state of New York provides a unique opportunity to tackle this problem: (1) A diverse geographical landscape spanning multiple climate regimes, (2) highly susceptible to all types of winter weather precipitation, and (3) home
to the state-of-the-art highly dense NY State Mesonet. This network not only includes 126 surface stations across the state, but also 17 profiler sites with over 5 years of data, ripe with opportunity to explore the vertical profile of the atmosphere.</div>

<div>UA seeks a postdoctoral research associate to join the AI2ES team to lead the development of a model aiming to improve on predictions of precipitation type in the state of NY. The researcher will be responsible for developing machine-learned models and
employing statistical techniques to identify patterns in meteorological (e.g., NYS Mesonet) and non-meteorological (e.g., power outages) datasets. The student will also be responsible for the visualization of results actionable to the end-user. Collaboration
with NY State sectors are expected, as well as emergency managers and decision makers.</div>

<div><b>REQUIREMENTS</b>: </div>
<div>(1) A Ph.D. in Atmospheric Science or a related field, from a college or university accredited by the U.S. Department of Education or an internationally recognized accrediting organization.
</div>
<div>(2) Applicants must address in their application their ability to work with a culturally diverse population.</div>
<div>(3) A demonstrated potential for research in the field of utilizing AI to study weather or climate problems.</div>
<div>(4) Strong command of computational techniques, including Python and Linux CLI.</div>
<div>(5) Prior experience with emphasis on model code development, evaluation, and interpretation of results.</div>
