The Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory of Columbia University located
in Palisades, New York, is accepting applications for either an
Associate Research Scientist or Research Scientist role within the
Marine Geology and Geophysics department.<br>
<br>
The incumbent scientist will serve as Technical Director for the R2R
data facility, serving as primary point of contact with the marine
operator community and leading all technical developments for this 4
institution collaborative effort. Design, develop, implement and
maintain software solutions to scientific problems and applications
for R2R. Represent R2R at science and geoinformatics community
meetings and lead other outreach efforts. Participate in proposal
writing and reporting to agencies and stakeholder communities.
Contribute to the design and operations of R2R cyber infrastructure
including maintaining the R2R cybersecurity plan. Ability to write
code in a variety of languages including shell scripting and for
example PHP, Python, and deal with legacy code in other languages
(PERL) will be needed. Must exercise high level of responsibility,
independence and expertise in the normal performance of duties.<br>

Duties and Responsibilities will include:</b>
<ul>
<li>Responsible for the day-to-day management of ongoing data
submissions from operators, overseeing junior staff in routine
data registration and implementation of programmatic quality
assessment for geophysical data from the UNOLS fleet.</li>
<li>Develops project plans, program specifications and manages
project related tasks working with R2R developers. Participate
in grant writing and annual reporting to funding agencies.</li>
<li>Serves as primary liaison with NCEI and US marine operator
community in the management of oceanographic data acquired with
UNOLS fleet and other research vessels.</li>
<li>Responsible for the design, development and implementation of
software for R2R backend and front end system components,
working with R2R developers.</li>
<li>Present on R2R developments and represent R2R at national and
international geoinformatics and science community conferences
and workshops. Seeks opportunities for new collaborations within
the geoinformatics community to advance R2R services. <br>
</li>
<li>Works independently on project execution. Exercises high
degree of independent judgement and initiative on all phases of
the work.</li>
<li>Supervises junior staff. Serves as co-PI on data system
projects.</li>
<li>May oversee specified grant budgets. Signatory authority in
the amount of $30,000 annually. <br>
</li>
</ul>
<p><b>Qualifications:</b><br>
</p>
<ul>
<li>Candidates should have a Ph.D. in Earth Science, Computer
Science, Math or Engineering with 2 years of related experience
with marine science data required.</li>
<li>Demonstrated advanced programming skills and diverse
background in scientific programming, required along with
knowledge and experience in at sea oceanographic data
acquisition. Must be skilled in geophysical, oceanographic and
acoustical data acquisition, calibration and processing. <br>
</li>
<li>Knowledge of scripting and programming languages (for example
PHP, Python) required as well as experience with HTML and SQL. <br>
</li>
<li>Comfortable working with various computer architectures
(Linux, PC, Apple) preferred. <br>
</li>
<li>Experience with team management and excellent communication
skills will be needed.<br>

Appointments are made on a fiscal year basis and are eligible for
renewal each July 1st, contingent upon performance and funding.<br>
