<b>Where You Will Work:</b>

Climate and Global Dynamics Laboratory (CGD) is part of the National Center
for Atmospheric Research (NCAR)
located in Boulder, CO. CGD's mission is to:
1. Discover the key processes in each component of the Earth's climate
system and the interactions among
them;
2. Represent this understanding in models and thereby provide a basis for
prediction of climate; and
3. Apply this understanding and these models to scientific problems of
societal relevance.

<b>What You Will Do:</b>

This position supports an interagency collaborative project to investigate
turbulent momentum transport processes in climate models.   This project
focuses on improving the representation of these processes in the Cloud
Layers Unified by Binormals (CLUBB) subgrid turbulence and convection
framework.

The project partners include researchers at Penn State University,
University of Wisconsin/Milwaukee, and NOAA’s Geophysical Fluid Dynamics
Laboratory (GFDL).  This collaborative project aims to provide improved
understanding and parameterization capability to NCAR and NOAA climate
modeling efforts.  As such the incumbent will interact with researchers
from the partner institutions to perform coordinated design and analyses of
model simulations.

Broad priorities will be determined in consultation with the NCAR
investigators of the project. The incumbent is expected to operate with a
significant degree of independence.

<b>Responsibilities:</b>

Under general guidance, conducts independent and collaborative research to
accomplish the goals of the project:

1. Formulates, implements and validates modifications to CLUBB in CESM;

2. Designs and carries out numerical experiments to investigate sensitivity
to various formulations and parameter choices at a range of model
resolutions and implements source code modifications as necessary; and

3. Coordinates with LES modelers to evaluate CLUBB algorithms with help of
LES and to design targeted experiments where needed.  If needed, designs
and performs coordinated numerical simulations in support of the project.
Analyzes climate model and LES data as well as observational data sets
where appropriate. Develops new diagnostics products. Revises the research
plan as needed.

Takes the lead and participates in writing of scientific journal articles
and formal reports, documenting the findings of the project. Presents
results at relevant meetings.

Documents experimental and diagnostics / analysis procedures.

Interacts with the project collaborators and partners regularly for
coordinated / joint analysis and experimentation.

<b>What You Need:</b>

Education and Years of Experience:

   - Ph.D. or equivalent in oceanic, atmospheric, or related earth sciences
   or in applied mathematics, physics or engineering.
   - Desired: 2 years of additional, relevant experience in at least one of
   these areas.

<b>Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:</b>

   - Ability to work on a team of NCAR and non-NCAR scientists.
   - Demonstrated ability in analyzing small scale turbulent transport
   processes applying theory and high-resolution simulations from the PBL
   through the troposphere.
   - Demonstrated ability in designing and implementing reliable Fortran
   code for parameterization of subgrid scale processes in atmospheric/climate
   models.
   - In-depth knowledge of the Cloud-layers Unified by Binormals (CLUBB)
   approach to representing subgrid variability and transport in numerical
   models.
   - Knowledge of the physical and mathematical basis of (coupled) general
   circulation models.
   - Experience with the CESM and its component models.
   - Demonstrated knowledge of the UNIX operating system and its variants,
   including skill in writing shell scripts.
   - Demonstrated knowledge of graphical analysis tools, e.g., Python,
   Matlab.
   - Demonstrated knowledge of data analysis methodologies for global
   climate model
   - Knowledge of web-based communication, e.g., HTML.
   - Excellent oral and written communication skills, with an emphasis in
   technical communication.
