Title: Postdoctoral Research Associate

Location: University of Florida, Soil and Water Sciences Department (Gainesville, FL)

Position description

A two-year postdoctoral position is available at the University of Florida (Gainesville, FL) to quantify the nitrogen cycling benefits of different cover crops in Florida organic vegetable production systems. This postdoctoral research
associate will be based in the Sustainable Nutrient Management Systems Lab and primarily advised by Dr. Maltais-Landry, although they will collaborate with scientists in the departments of Agronomy, Horticultural Sciences and Entomology & Nematology.

This position is linked to a USDA-OREI grant (see description at https://cris.nifa.usda.gov/cgi-bin/starfinder/0?path=fastlink1.txt&id=anon&pass=&search=R=89283&format=WEBLINK),
with field research that will be primarily conducted at the UF Plant Science Research and Education Unit (Citra, FL). This work will mainly focus on nitrogen cycling in crops and soils, using 15N to trace N from cover crops to subsequent
cash crops and soils, and microbial ecology to link changes in microbial activity and communities to N cycling. The effects of different cover crops on crop quality and nematode pressure will also be measured. The research associate will work in both field
and lab conditions, and they will have to analyze and interpret data from different focus areas. As such, experience and expertise are necessary in nutrient cycling (in both crops and soils), with a preference for candidates that have experience working with 15N.

We expect the postdoctoral research associate to have the ability to work effectively in both field and lab settings and to play an important leadership role in an inter-disciplinary project. The research associate will also contribute
to research design, in addition to leading data analysis and writing activities. This project involves an extension component, and the research associate is expected to help organize and participate in these events.
