The research program, under the direction of Dr. Oliva Pisani, is focused on identifying shifts in soil microbial community composition in response to land use and/or management practices. Research topics include, but are not limited to, identifying associations between the soil microbial community structure; soil organic matter content, chemical composition, and physical protection mechanisms; carbon and nutrient cycling; and crop productivity. Analysis of the soil microbial community will be accomplished by extraction of phospholipid fatty acids (PLFA) and identification/quantitation by gas chromatography coupled with flame ionization detection.
