Candidates should ideally be recent graduates in economic geology, mineral economics or a closely related field with an interest in global raw materials supply chains. The position will be available from the 1<sup>st</sup> of February 2021, and will then run for three years – the standard timeframe for a PhD in Germany. A salary compatible with German standards for PhD financing will be paid (see ad for details, link below). The deadline for applications is quite soon, on the 20<sup>th</sup> of November, but this will probably be extended to the 30<sup>th</sup> of November. <o:p></o:p></span></p><p class=MsoPlainText><span lang=EN-US><o:p> </o:p></span></p><p class=MsoPlainText><span lang=EN-US>The position is part of a larger consortium project financed by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) and coordinated by the Helmholtz Institute Freiberg. The consortium project is in turn part of a new competence cluster on "Recycling & Green Batteries" funded by the BMBF. The overall goal of the project is to estimate the possible future contribution of recycling to the reduction of the CO2-footprint of Li-ion-battery production. This specific position advertised here will investigate how the mix of primary raw materials necessary for future battery production may evolve up to 2050. That is, the main task will be to compile estimates of how much of the primary production of each material (Li, Co, Ni, Mn and graphite) will probably come from which ore deposit type (e.g. Ni and Co from Ni-laterites). This information can then be combined with data on the corresponding CO2-balances for ore processing, beneficiation and smelting as well as a prediction of probable recycling rates (other position in this project, located at German Federal Geological Survey) to estimate the CO2-footprint of the raw materials inputs.
