The researcher will be a key contributor to a mixed-methods research effort to understand how local stakeholders from different sectors (e.g., local officials, small business owners, homeowners, community services) currently receive, interpret, and use existing flood information and to explore new communications approaches that build on new NOAA-developed flood inundation map forecast products. Potential end-users for such data likely differ in significant ways from known users (e.g., emergency managers) and it is currently unclear how data presented with varying complexity, precision, and utility for decision-making may impact comprehension, trust, and flood safety action across user groups. The ideal candidate will have a PhD that has given them exposure to both social and physical science approaches relevant to flood risk communication. Strong skills in qualitative data analysis are essential, and we strongly prefer candidates with experience with focus group facilitation and recruiting community-based stakeholder participants. Candidates should be able to demonstrate comfort working in interdisciplinary, collaborative research teams. Qualified candidates could come from multiple disciplines of study, but research experience resulting in publications on risk communication, natural hazards, and/or flooding are especially desirable. This project is part of UVM?s contribution to the Cooperative Institute for Research to Operations in Hydrology (CIROH) and the post-doctoral scholar will collaborate with researchers at project partner RTI International, and benefit from interactions with other faculty, post-doctoral scholars, and students working on a variety of CIROH-funded projects at UVM and other participating institutions. The successful candidate may begin in August of 2023 and will work on using observations from a variety of platforms to constrain how moisture converges into the Mountain West and the origin of regional water stress. They will leverage the perturbed parameter ensemble created in the development of the GISS-E3 model to constrain and understand how global climate affe cts regional water stress. The qualified applicant should have experience working with climate model data and observations and a background in atmospheric science. They should have a strong foundation in programming and experience in using machine learning to develop surrogate models, or an interest in learning how to develop surrogate models. The postdoctoral scholar will be expected to participate in a UAV field deployment as well as providing mentorship to the graduate student supported by GROWS. The position is a 1 year appointment with renewal up to 3 years. GROWS places a premium on advancing your career through conference travel and collaborating closely with our colleagues at NASA centers is a key element of the proposal, including a two-week secondment to NASA-GISS in New York City. The UW is a land-grant university located in Laramie, WY. The location is both scenic and accessible: Denver International Airport is a short flight from the regional airport or a 2.5 hour drive. Laramie hosts a laid-back, outdoorsy lifestyle with a low cost of living. The UW ATSC is a vibrant department boasting unrivaled supercomputer facilities and a research aircraft. UW is reserved 13% of total core-hours at the NCAR-Wyoming Supercomputing Center (NWSC). ATSC hosts the UW King Air, which flies as part of the NSF Lower Atmosphere Observing Facility (LAOF). ATSC is a graduate-only, research-focused department with a group composition of 7 faculty and 5 research scientists by the start date of fall 2023. UW and ATSC encourage candidates who will support and advance our mission of enhancing divers ity to apply. Information on UW diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) efforts may be found here. Join our collaborative team to address this question! Apply: https://arizona.csod.com/ux/ats/careersite/4/home/requisition/14785?c=arizona Contact: laurameredith at arizona.edu The School of Natural Resources and the Environment at the University of Arizona (UA) seeks a postdoctoral researcher to work on a new project funded by the Department of Energy on how trace volatile organic compounds (VOCs), produced by microbial, plant, and abiotic processes, mediate below ground plant and microbial interactions by extending the rhizosphere and enhance soil carbon storage. The postdoc will help with field and lab experiments to determine how plant productivity, root biomass, and plant growth stages influence soil carbon through VOC-mediated processes in an agroecosystem of the bioenergy crop sorghum. Specifically, soil VOC concentrations will be measured using novel automated soil gas probes connected to an online proton-transfer-reaction time-of-flight mass spectrometer (PTR-TOF-MS) to track changes in soil VOC interactions directly in the rhizosphere of different variants of sorghum with their traits measured overhead by a gantry ?scanalyzer? at the Maricopa Agricultural Center (MAC; https://mac.arizona.edu/). The postdoc will also contribute to field work at the Blodgett Forest Research Station (https://forests.berkeley.edu/forests/blodgett) in California to help determine the impact of deep soil warming on soil carbon in the coniferous forest. The postdoc scholar will deploy, operate, and maintain VOC meausrements at the MAC site and UArizona labs and they will enhance identification with gas chromatograph-mass spectrometer systems. The specific expected outcome of this work will be new understanding of the role of VOCs in soil C cycling and stabilization and in soil ecological and metabolic interactions. The position will be based at the University of Arizona in Tucson, Arizona and the postdoc will join an interdisciplinary team from UA, Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, and Aerodyne Research, Inc. The postdoctoral candidate?s development will be facilitated through integrative interactions, constructive assessment, and support by all institutions on the project. The postdoc will actively participate in research, management, and communication activities, and will be encouraged to engage in research across institution representing university, national lab, and industry settings. Additional postdoc activities organized within the project include instrument calibration, maintenance, and configuration of experiments, data analysis, talks, preparation of publications, and project meetings. Outstanding UA benefits include health, dental, vision, and life insurance; paid vacation, sick leave, and holidays; UA/ASU/NAU tuition reduction for the employee and qualified family members; access to UA recreation and cultural activities; and more! The University of Arizona has been recognized for our innovative work-life programs. For more information about working at the University of Arizona and relocations services, please click here. Duties & Responsibilities * Determine the impact of plant productivity, root biomass, and plant growth stages on soil carbon in an agro-ecosystem by leading the deployment and operation of online field subsurface VOC measurements. * Lead data processing of soil, microbial, and plant microbial VOC emissions and uptake alongside environmental variables. Lead or collaborate on the integration of plant, soil, and microbial characterization using multi-omics techniques with VOC measurements. * Contribute to the determination of how deep soil warming influences soil carbon in a coniferous forest using field subsurface VOC measurements. * Participate in PTR-TOF-MS and GC-PTR-TOF-MS calibration, maintenance, and preparing and running samples. Construct custom automated VOC sampling systems using our established systems and help develop new systems. CW3E consists of 70+ passionate scientists who develop and operate state-of-the-art modeling (e.g., CW3E version of the Weather Research and Forecasting model tailored for extreme events over the Western US ? West-WRF) and observing (e.g., Atmospheric River Reconnaissance) systems to improve forecast capability for weather and water extremes in Western US and to enable more effective policies and practices in the region. CW3E aims to revolutionize the physical understanding, observations, predictions/projections of extreme events in Western North America at different time scales from days to decades, and their impacts on floods, droughts, hydropower, ecosystems and economy. CW3E practices UCSD Principles of Community to create a climate of fairness, cooperation, and professionalism. This position is supported by NOAA?s Cooperative Institute for Research to Operations in Hydrology (CIROH) program, as well as CW3E?s Forecast Informed Reservoir Operations (FIRO) program. CIROH is a national consortium committed to advancing water prediction - the forecasting of streamflow and its extremes (e.g., floods/droughts). FIRO is a reservoir-operation strategy that uses enhanced monitoring and improved weather and water forecasts to inform decision making to selectively retain or release water from reservoirs to optimize water supply reliability and environmental co-benefits and to enhance flood-risk reduction. The position will work closely with Dr. Ming Pan and various teams at CW3E. Applicants should be self-motivated and hard-working. Good written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to produce scientific publications and presentations and meet project milestones are required. The ideal candidate would have experience with hydrologic modeling, ensemble forecasting, and flood/drought analysis. Strong analytical backgrounds with a Ph.D. in meteorology, hydrology or environmental or civil engineering is preferred. Programming experience working in a Linux/Unix environment with experience in scripting languages such as Python and R as well as in supercomputing is desired. The University of California is an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action Employer. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, national origin, disability, age, protected veteran status, gender identity or sexual orientation. Position will remain open until filled. To apply: send CV, cover letter and names of 3 referees to Dr. Ming Pan, m3pan at ucsd.edu A PDF file is attached for the position too. Thanks for your kind attention! (Mail list admin - I'm sending this message via my old work email because it's already registered, and I hope this is fine.) Thank you! Postdoctoral Fellowship Posting-USDA-Agricultural Research Service ORISE SCInet Postdoctoral Fellowship in Transdisciplinary Food Security Agency Modeling in Alaska Research Project: The SCINet/Big Data Research Participation Program of the USDA ARS offers research opportunities to motivated postdoctoral fellows interested in solving agriculture-related problems at a range of spatial and temporal scales, from the genome to the continent, and sub-daily to evolutionary time scales. One of the goals of the SCINet Initiative is to develop and apply new technologies, including AI and machine learning, to help solve complex agricultural problems that also depend on collaboration across scientific disciplines and geographic locations. In addition, many of these technologies rely on the synthesis, integration, and analysis of large, diverse datasets that benefit from high performance computing (HPC) clusters. The objective of this fellowship is to facilitate cross-disciplinary, cross-location research through collaborative research on problems of interest to each applicant and amenable to or requiring the HPC environment. Training will be provided in data science, scientific computing, AI/machine learning, and related topics as needed for the fellow to complete their research. Throughout the course of this research project, the Fellow will have the opportunity to gain experience in two efforts where we will develop (1) a methodology for a baseline measurement of food agency in Alaska through the lens of biophysical and socioeconomic drivers, (2) a berry forecasting tool to predict berry growth with community-driven research with the Alaskan Quinhagak community. Food agency focuses on understanding the drivers of food security and insecurity and is the ability of an individual, community, or nation to meet their food acquisition and preparation goals. The Fellow will identify existing data (including geospatial/remote sensing data) and will conduct research to create a baseline framework for describing food agency in Alaska. The Fellow will have the opportunity to gain experience in 1) Data collection and integration from multiple sources, 2) Multi-disciplinary data harmonization for modeling purposes, and 3) Creative, empirically-based modeling approaches to address questions that are not yet integrated into existing mechanistic models. Specifically, the Quinhagak community relies on berry foraging as a large component of their food agency. Therefore, a berry forecasting tool will be developed as a specific application integrating biophysical and socioeconomic drivers to understand the impacts of climate change on traditional foraging locations as permafrost thaws and soil hydrology changes impacting Rubus chamaemorus / populations. The Fellow will collaborate with community members, tribal governments, and university partners to use geospatial data provided by partners to develop this community tool to predict Salmonberry harvests in the face of environmental changes. Learning Objectives: The Fellow will have the opportunity to learn social science theory and methodology, transdisciplinary modeling, soil health, statistical and economic modeling. The Fellow will have the opportunity to be mentored by three supervisors spanning environmental modeling, big data management, statistical modeling, conservation psychology, anthropology, soil and water science, and agricultural economics. The main learning objective of the Fellow will be in the application of a social theoretical framework to analyze biophysical data and develop a baseline of food agency in Alaska. The Fellow will be encouraged to spend immersive time in Quinhagak, Alaska to meet with community members and learn firsthand about the importance of berry picking for Yuuyaragq. Additionally, the Fellow will have the opportunity to be an active scientist within the USDA-ARS NGPRL, SEWR and the University of Alaska, Fairbanks. The Fellow will also be able to take online courses in applied scientific tools, such as R, Python and statistics and to learn collaboration and leadership skills through workshop and working group experiences.
