Be well Jeff https://ra.nas.edu/RAPLab10/Opportunity/Opportunity.aspx?LabCode=64&ROPCD=641506&RONum=C0835&ROBaseMode=R100 The Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) Remote Sensing Division in Washington, DC is seeking applicants for postdoc opportunities in ensemble aerosol prediction with a range of focus areas from ensemble data assimilation to verification and post-processing. The Navy has a particular interest in forecasting naturally occurring and anthropogenic aerosol particles which impact operations. Current Navy aerosol forecasting relies on the deterministic Navy Aerosol Analysis Prediction System (NAAPS). A probabilistic version of the NAAPS system, referred to as Ensemble NAAPS (ENAAPS), was developed and is in the process of transitioning to operations. The ENAAPS system will be a focal point of the above research opportunities. Projects related to ensemble data assimilation will focus on incorporating new observation types into the Navy?s ENAAPS ensemble aerosol prediction system in order to improve aerosol vertical distribution, speciation, and coupling to meteorological parameters. Those wishing a verification focus will leverage NCAR?s METplus verification software to evaluate Navy and international model performance with an emphasis on developing metrics, improving visualization, and inferring processes related to aerosol vertical distribution using a host of lidar and airborne datasets. Finally, research projects related to post-processing will leverage existing machine learning and statistical methods for consolidating ensemble aerosol information into likely outcomes that can be used in downstream decision-making applications. Candidates are required to have completed a PhD in atmospheric science, environmental engineering, or a closely related field before starting the postdoc. Some programming experience is required (Python, Fortran, Shell Scripting). NRL has access to high performance computing resources that will leveraged for postdoc research projects. Additionally, previous experience with data assimilation and aerosol prediction is preferred. This research opportunity is a collaborative effort with NRL's Marine Meteorology Division in Monterey, CA. As such, the same research opportunity can be found under the Marine Meteorology Division for those interested in being stationed in Monterey. London, UK Message-ID: Postdoctoral Research Associate in Atmosphere Microbial Habitability Modelling The Earth Surface Science group at Queen Mary University of London (QMUL) are seeking a 24-month PDRA to work on a Human Frontier Science Project (HFSP) funded project ?The atmosphere: a living, breathing ecosystem??. The project is a collaboration between QMUL?s School of Geography, the University of Guelph (Canada), Monash University (Australia) and Arizona State University (USA). The team aim to resolve the composition, capabilities, and activities of atmospheric microbes at a global scale, with the overall goal to distinguish whether the atmosphere exhibits structure and microbial activity characteristic of a true ecosystem, or if it is simply a passive dispersal medium for microorganisms. The PDRA will develop theoretical modelling approaches (including bioenergetics calculations, power-based ecosystem modelling) to investigate the potential habitability and ecological structure and function of microbial communities in the atmosphere. The initial focus for the PDRA is to model the habitability and ecological processes occurring in Earth's atmosphere, and then to translate the tools and knowledge generated to the atmosphere of other planetary bodies or exoplanets. The postdoc will be embedded within a larger team of microbiologists, geochemists, engineers and astrobiologists (in the UK, Canada, the US and Australia) who are working collaboratively, via our recent Human Frontier Science Program award, to understand the atmosphere is as a 'living, breathing ecosystem'. Aside from the main modelling duties, the PDRA will have the opportunity to participate in our global sampling campaign and is expected to interact frequently with other members of the larger team to assist with the generation and interpretation of biological, geochemical, and geophysical data (and its integration into numerical models), and contribute towards the team's outputs and dissemination activities. The PDRA will develop, implement and apply microbial bioenergetics ecosystem modelling tools to study the atmosphere, including its resident microorganisms and its overall habitability. Modelling will focus on: i) Connecting the physicochemical characteristics of the atmosphere with its (potentially) resident microorganisms. ii) Determining plausible rates of energy-generating and energy-requiring reactions for atmosphere dwelling microorganisms and assess catabolic and anabolic activity. iii) Combining various (biological, geochemical and geophysical) datasets to assess the survival and potential growth of atmosphere-dwelling microorganisms (using data generated by the project, as well as existing data). iv) Assessing habitability of Earth?s atmosphere and habitability indices of the atmospheres of other planetary bodies. The PDRA will be a full member of the HFSP research and as well as modelling, is expected to participate in the team?s data analyses and synthesis efforts, participate in cross-discipline collaboration, training and knowledge sharing exercises, and may take part in fieldwork. The PDRA will be expected to lead the presentation of findings at national and international conferences, and publish in leading academic journals. Applicants must have a PhD (by time of appointment) in a relevant natural science discipline, and a track-record of research productivity, including peer-reviewed publications. Candidates should have experience in numerical/bioenergetic/ecosystem/habitability modelling, and good understanding of microbial processes in the context of habitability and astrobiology. Candidates should demonstrate initiative and the ability to work independently. The post is based at the Mile End Campus in London. It is full time post for 2 years with the possibility of extension subject to available funds, with an expected start date in September 2023 or as soon as possible after that date. The starting salary will be ?40,223 (Grade 4) per annum pro-rata inclusive of London Allowance. Informal enquiries should be addressed to Dr. James Bradley at james.bradley at qmul.ac.uk. To apply for the role, please visit: https://www.qmul.ac.uk/jobs/vacancies/items/8632.html Applications should include: ? A cover letter (max. 2 pages) stating your motivation for applying to this position, research interests, relevant skills, training and experience. ? Curriculum vitae. ? Copy of official transcript(s). ? Contact information for at least two and up to 3 references. Important: Please also email Dr. James Bradley (james.bradley at qmul.ac.uk) to confirm your intention to apply. The closing date for applications is 25th August 2023. UKRI partners on this large research consortium project include a number of leading UK institutions and scientists working in the exciting field of atmospheric CO2 removal. This post is in the project modelling team led by Professor D.J. Beerling FRS, and project partners at the University of Leeds, Professor S.A. Banwart and Professor L.J. West. The appointed Research Associate will assess the security of carbon dioxide removal (CDR) in the UK resulting from ERW during transport of weathered products in rivers and groundwater from agricultural land to the marine environment (Kantzas et al. 2022, Nat. Geosci., 15, 382-389). The Research Associate will assess the extent to which Greenhouse Gas Removal (GGR) efficiency by ERW may be affected by carbonate precipitation or other interactions with groundwater and river systems during water flow and transport to the coastal margins at national scale. For example, the extent to which fate of ERW products during transport in groundwater, streams and rivers is influenced by alkalinity, pH and aqueous carbonate speciation, carbonate mineral precipitation and carbon dioxide gas exchange with the atmosphere. The goal is to produce a UK-wide scenario-based evaluation of the net GGR potential of ERW and its contribution to the UK?s net zero target incorporating new evaluation of critical uncertainties. You will have experience of geochemical measurements or modelling (e.g. using PHREEQC, USGS hydrogeological code PHAST or similar codes). The responsibilities of the NSF PD include long-range planning and budget development for the program, the administration of the merit review process and proposal recommendations, the preparation of press releases, feature articles and material describing advances in the research supported, and coordination and partnership with other programs in NSF, other Federal agencies and organizations. Specifically for this position, we seek to identify a candidate with expertise in climate and/or weather modeling, who could also provide support in the oversight of NCAR's modeling activities. Please refer to the Dear Colleague Letter that serves as an announcement of opportunity to become a PD through the Intergovernmental Personnel Act (IPA). IPA rotators come to NSF on temporary (1-4 year) assignments and serve in a full-time program management role alongside NSF permanent staff. The advantage to NSF of the rotator arrangement is that it brings in new ideas and viewpoints from the scientific community, and the advantage to the rotator and home institution is that the rotator gains increased visibility and a full appreciation of the scientific landscape across the US. Rotators are also allowed Independent Research/Development (IRD) plans that provide time to maintain involvement with professional research and mentoring. IPAs remain employees of their home institution and NSF provides an award to the institution to cover the cost of the individual. The candidate would ideally start as soon as possible. Official application materials should be submitted per the instructions in the Dear Colleague Letter (https://new.nsf.gov/careers/openings/geo/ags/ags-2022-85586). Questions about the position can be directed to Dr. Yu Gu, acting Section Head of the Atmosphere Section (ygu at nsf.gov). Review of applications will begin September 1, 2023 and continue until the position is filled. The position consists of a postdoctoral appointment in the University of Maryland, Baltimore County?s (UMBC) Center for Space Sciences and Technology (CSST), funded by NASA through the Center for Research and Exploration in Space Science and Technology II (CRESST II). The successful applicant(s) will work with Dr. Christina Hedges to extract time-series flux data from NASA?s TESS mission on solar system objects. NASA?s TESS mission is a survey, observing large portions of the sky each month at high cadence. TESS data includes ?Full Frame Images? (FFIs) that each cover approximately 12 square degrees on the sky. This dataset is valuable for searching for time-domain astronomical phenomena such as transiting exoplanets, stellar flares, and supernovae. These surveys also observe bright solar system objects in these FFIs which provides a unique window into solar system objects with long baseline, uninterrupted photometry. However, they are challenging to extract due to their motion, and TESS noise. The successful applicant(s) will work to build on and improve existing methods and Python tools to extract solar system objects from the TESS data and produce and analyze a dataset of the time-series photometry. GSFC is a vibrant community of over 100 Ph.D. astronomers and encourages participation and collaboration. The successful candidates will have at least 20%-time to pursue independent research. All duties related to the TESS Mission and independent research are fully funded through this position. Candidates for the position must have a Ph.D. in astronomy, astrophysics, physics, computer science, data science or a related field by the date of the appointment. A qualified candidate would have experience in the following: ? Working with time-series data from space-based observatories (e.g. NASA Kepler, K2, TESS, HST) ? Photometry methods ? Statistical analyses of time-series data ? Building and working with Python pipelines for working with astronomical data ? Version controlling with git/github Additional expertise in any of the following is beneficial, but not required: ? Detrending time-series data ? Working with large datasets ? High performance computing ? Working with bayesian modeling frameworks (such as pymc3) ? Building hierarchical models ? Python packaging Candidates should send a cover letter, CV (including publication list), a 3-page statement of research interests, and contact information for three references via email to Ms. Katherine McKee (katherine.mckee at nasa.gov). Complete applications received by August 27, 2023, will receive full consideration, this position will otherwise remain open until filled. The nominal start date for this position is in Summer 2023, the exact date to be decided by mutual agreement. This position is funded for 2 years, with the possibility of extension depending on the availability of funding. Flexible work from home options are available for this position. The successful candidate will be expected to be onsite at GSFC a minimum of 2 days a week, though they may work onsite up to 5 days a week. Salary and benefits are competitive, commensurate with experience and qualifications. For more information about the proposed research, contact Dr. Christina Hedges (christina.l.hedges at nasa.gov). For information about CRESST II or UMBC, contact Dr. Don Engel (donengel at umbc.edu). Vaccination is strongly recommended for UMBC students, faculty, and staff.
