Spark is a science-driven nonprofit focused on identifying sources of unmanaged climate risk and accelerating research advancements in those fields. Reducing the rate of near-term warming depends heavily on reducing atmospheric concentrations of methane. The highest priority action is to lower anthropogenic methane emissions. However, even with aggressive emission controls, there remains unmanaged risk from natural methane emissions (e.g. wetlands, permafrost), which are rising. Spark invites proposals with transformative potential to advance the understanding of natural methane sinks and potential atmospheric removal approaches. Proposals will be considered across three research tracks: Methane Sink Assessment, Enabling Research Tools, and Exploring Potential Atmospheric Methane Removal Approaches. The first submission deadline is March 1, 2024, with award decisions by mid-April. Subsequent submission deadlines will be every three months on a rolling basis. Grants will be up to $300,000 USD with a period of performance of up to 2 years. For more information and to apply, please visit our website or contact us at amr at sparkclimate.org. Spark will host three webinars relevant to this funding call in January. To receive updates on upcoming webinars and other funding opportunity news, please sign up for our mailing list . Full announcement also available here: https://jobs.inrae.fr/en/ot-14993 (english) or https://jobs.inrae.fr/ot-14994 (fran?ais) Many thanks in advance for sharing this with potential candidates and sorry for cross-postings, Matthias Post-doctoral researcher Interactions between water flow and growth of trees in a changing climate Background Water in trees is under tension. If this tension gets broken, for example due to droughts, trees have to rebuild new vessels or tracheids to restore full water flow. The interaction between tree growth and hydraulic traits is not yet implemented in current dynamic global vegetation models. The project PHydrauCC researches the interactions between tree growth and hydraulic traits and how this is changing with increasing CO2. Aim The postdoc will embed new process descriptions how plants respond to climate extremes into the dynamic global vegetation model CABLE-POP. We expect that the enhanced model will display hysteresis and legacy effects in plant growth for several years after major drought and heatwave events. The postdoc will assess drought-related risks under climate change in temperate and boreal forests, with a special interest in the different hydraulic strategies of broad-leaved angiosperms compared to needle-leaved gymnosperms. We are looking for an enthusiastic researcher able to work with and develop large-scale vegetation models, who is motivated to study legacy effects in forests in response to major drought events. The successful candidate will work closely with Matthias Cuntz and Emilie Joetzjer (UMR Silva ) located in Nancy , France, and with the other members of the project PHydrauCC such as Jean-Christophe Domec , J?r?me Og?e , Myriam Moreno (UMR ISBA , Bordeaux), as well as Cyrille Rathgeber (UMR Silva) and several students. Requirements PhD in suitable fields (physics, ecophysiology, global change biology) Strong programming skills (e.g. Fortran, Python) Good spoken and written English language skills Ability to carry out independent and well-organised research, as well as work as part of a team Interest in ecophysiology, forest functioning and/or biogeochemical cycles Location: UMR Silva Nancy, France; 1.5 hours from Paris Contract duration: 12 + 24 months Starting Date: the position is available immediately and will remain open until filled Contacts Matthias Cuntz ? matthias.cuntz at inrae.fr Emilie Joetzjer ? emilie.joetzjer at inrae.fr How to apply Applicants should submit a complete application package by email to the contact above. Sarah Environmental / Biological Chemistry Faculty: Cluster Search in Sustainability and Environment https://jobs.hampshire.edu/index.cgi?&JA_m=JASDET&JA_s=1247 Job Title: Environmental / Biological Chemistry Faculty: Cluster Search in Sustainability and Environment Position Type: Full Time Pay Range/ Status: $65,000-$81,000 Anticipated Start Date: July 1, 2024 Environmental / Biological Chemistry Faculty: Cluster Search in Sustainability and Environment Hampshire College is an experimenting institution with a mission to advance social justice and transform higher education. We seek creative and collaborative colleagues to join our faculty as part of a major cluster hiring initiative across the curriculum. Hampshire College is seeking up to three (3) transdisciplinary faculty whose teaching and research engage sustainability and environment, to begin July 2024. These positions are open rank with a preference for early career scholars and practitioners to be hired at the Assistant Professor level. Candidates who hold tenure or a strong track record of multidisciplinary experience may be considered for hiring at the Associate or Full level. In support of students working broadly across the liberal arts, especially in the areas of sustainability, environment, and health, we seek candidates who hold academic expertise in one or more of the following areas: Plant/Agroecology (such as sustainable agriculture, plant-microbe interactions, botany, mycology) Environmental/Biological Chemistry (such as soil chemistry, computational chemistry, archeological chemistry, metabolomics, biochemistry, enzymology) Data / Computer Science (such as computational methods, machine learning, artificial intelligence, data activism, bioinformatics, statistical analytics, computational social science) We seek student-centered teacher-scholars who employ an integrated approach to teaching theory, methods, and practical applications with inclusive pedagogies. We welcome candidates who engage in environmental justice; use the Hampshire campus (including the Hampshire farm and woods) as a site for research and experimentation; and/or present and teach data analysis as a tool for students pursuing any area of liberal study. The successful candidate will: Connect at least half their normal teaching course load each year with one or two of the Learning Collaboratives and Urgent Challenges described here; Work in individual and group settings to advise and mentor an increasingly diverse body of Hampshire students; Collaborate with faculty colleagues across disciplines and actively participate in governance and service committees; Demonstrate engagement with antiracism in their teaching, scholarship/creative activity, and/or service; Participate in events and forums organized by Hampshire's four transdisciplinary Learning Collaboratives; Be eager to participate in continuous pedagogical experimentation. Hampshire Faculty Our faculty are nimble: able to teach broadly from introductory to advanced levels and eager to contribute both core courses and inventive, transdisciplinary classes that cross boundaries and stimulate and support project-based student work. At Hampshire, we have neither departments nor majors, so you will join and collaborate within affinities (e.g. STEM backgrounds) and across the College to teach and mentor students studying in every area of the liberal arts and sciences. New faculty hold great potential for contributing to and determining the direction of Hampshire. About Hampshire Hampshire?s academic program is unique within higher education in the United States. Students draw from multiple disciplines and methodologies to develop their own concentrations, and every student completes an independent year-long project synthesizing their course of study as a condition of graduation. Students are provided narrative evaluations of their work instead of grades. Our student community is distinctively diverse: this year 39% are BIPOC or international, 37.5% receive Pell Grants, approximately a third are neurodivergent, and a substantial majority identify as LGBTQIA+. Hampshire is a member of the Five College consortium (Amherst College, Smith College, Mount Holyoke College, and the University of Massachusetts), and located in Amherst, MA. Building on its student-driven approach, Hampshire is implementing a radical new academic program that emphasizes urgent challenges, transdisciplinarity, antiracism, community engagement, and project-based skills. We convene transdisciplinary Learning Collaboratives that assemble faculty, students, and staff to address urgent questions developed by and voted on by the community. Additionally, Hampshire has implemented a ?Race and Power? requirement that ensures students, staff, and faculty alike will engage in critical reflection on racial justice and equity throughout their Hampshire careers. In the letter of application, candidates are encouraged to explain how their teaching and scholarly/artistic work does or could contribute to this curricular and pedagogical vision. Qualifications The PhD, equivalent terminal degree is preferred, or Master?s and equivalent in professional work experience is required by the time of appointment. Qualified candidates must have demonstrated teaching experience at the undergraduate level and an active research agenda. An ability to communicate and work effectively within a culturally diverse and multi-disciplinary campus community is essential. These positions involve full-time teaching with a five-course annual teaching load, as well as substantial student advising and participation in College governance. Hampshire College is an equal opportunity employer and deeply committed to a community of excellence, equity, diversity, and inclusion. We're particularly committed to revealing and combating the social and institutional structures that support racism and white supremacy in all phases of employment and college life. We believe that the educational and employment environment is enhanced when diverse groups of people with diverse ideas come together to work and grow. We encourage applications from women, underrepresented minorities, persons with disabilities, sexual minority groups, veterans, and other candidates who will contribute to the diversification and enrichment of ideas and perspectives. Hampshire College is committed to removing barriers to employment faced by equity-seeking groups and encourages (but does not require) members of these groups to self-identify in their application materials. Applicants whose work incorporates a global perspective and a demonstrated commitment to issues of diversity in the work environment are particularly encouraged to apply. Application Candidates should submit the following to apply: a cover letter of approximately two pages describing your teaching (including ways that you draw on and work across disciplines), your scholarly interests and projects, and how you will contribute to addressing one or more of Hampshire?s Learning Collaboratives and urgent challenges; a statement addressing your approach to justice, equity, and antiracism (JEA) in teaching philosophy and practice; a curriculum vita; names, titles, and contact information for three referees; and up to 20 pages of professional work Please submit your cover letter, statement, CV, references, and work samples via our website: https://jobs.hampshire.edu. No hard copies will be accepted. If you have general questions about this search, please email dof at hampshire.edu. For fullest consideration, all materials should be received by January 12, 2024. The major goal of this work is to improve historical estimates of climate forcing from sulfate, a key input to PMIP simulations of the past 1000 years, and a topical issue in recent climate trends. Specifically the postdoc and technician will be measuring sulfur isotopes by MC-ICP-MS in ice core samples from recent volcanic eruptions such as Pinatubo, Agung, and Katmai/Novarupta. This will allow us to recalibrate how we scale volcanic sulfate deposition on ice sheets to a stratospheric sulfur loading for past volcanic eruptions. The project takes advantage of new ice cores and novel isotope fingerprinting to disentangle stratospheric sulfate from other sources (as in this recent paper ) and is in collaboration with colleagues at the British Antarctic Survey, Durham, and Oslo. The deadline for these positions is Wednesday Jan 10, 2024. Please pass on to anyone you think might be interested! Any informal questions can be directed to Andrea Burke (ab276 at st-andrews.ac.uk) There is also a fully-funded PhD studentship advertised for a project measuring high resolution sulfur isotopes on major eruptions over the Common Era. Our department's development efforts offer opportunities for creative problem-solving, analysis, and communication at the interface of extreme weather, climate change, and risk. Catastrophe models depend fundamentally on quantitative description and simulation of the background climate states driving hazardous atmospheric activity. To produce unbiased estimates of today's risk, model proceed by careful consideration of the changes taking place over the length of the historical data, heavily supplemented by mechanistic physical reasoning where the statistics are uncertain, to represent the current climatology of natural hazards. This is a fantastic position for a climate scientist with critical thinking and analytic skills pertaining to the modeling and analysis of climate impacts on atmospheric extremes. We hope to find candidates with a solid command of physical climate science, collaborative mindset, and a fearlessness for wading across disciplinary boundaries. The work in the position will contribute toward improvements in model-building to enable the (re)insurance sector to make better-informed decisions to bolster social resilience to a changing climate. Day to Day Responsibilities * Contribute to data analysis, physical interpretation, and documentation of climatic signals, trends and nonstationarities in atmospheric perils represented by Verisk's models. Signals of interest include those due to large-scale climatic modes, as well as those resulting from anthropogenically-forced activities * Perform literature review and synthesis related to climatology and impacts of changing background environments on various perils * Help interpret unfolding catastrophic events in the context of climatic variability and change * Help formulate answers to client questions related to climatic aspects of Verisk Extreme Event Solution's atmospheric peril models * Over time, come to act as a soundboard for teams building out models aiming for consistency with current climate state, as well as climate-change projected extensions of our model products Required Skills and Qualifications * Doctoral degree in Climate Science or closely related field required (PhD required; relevant post-doctoral or work experience may also be a plus but are not required) * Data analysis, including ability and comfort in handling and intercomparing gridded climate model output data, as well as and sparse local observations with heterogeneity in space, time, and quality * Strong interest in reviewing, understanding and explaining climatic change across a range of phenomena and regions * Interest in interfacing and collaborating closely with a range of domain-area physical-scientists and statisticians within modeling teams * Excellent communication in both technical and non-technical contexts, and formal presentations and informal discussions. Ability to create compelling data visualization to tell a story * Current knowledge of CMIP models and scenarios * Willingness and confidence to provide climate science leadership and guidance to team members; plus humility to admit when you don't have an answer and consult with other team members to find one Bonus Skills (not strictly necessary, but presence of any would strengthen candidacy) * Expertise in the area of formal detection and attribution methodologies * Experience blending physical information with statistics to account for uncertainties in model and data * Fluency with coding in R, and experience with R package development * Experience with media interviews * Proficiency in shell scripting and cluster computing Official link to apply: https://jobs.smartrecruiters.com/Verisk/743999953024408-applied-climate-scientist?trid=1d68fb86-bf7b-4b74-9e40-9ec37cf43ea1 ________________________________ This email is intended solely for the recipient. Are you passionate about coastal water systems and hydrodynamic processes? Are you excited to study enclosed former estuaries with field measurements and numerical models? Then this job may be for you! At Delft University of Technology in Delft, The Netherlands, we are looking for candidates for the PhD position Stratification, Circulation and Mixing in Enclosed Former Estuaries. In this project, you will investigate the wind-related variations in stratification, circulation and mixing in enclosed former estuaries. You will study the role of these phenomena in the transport of anoxic deep water to the shallower areas. You will determine how processes such as wind-setup, upwelling, downwelling, internal waves and density-driven flows influence the dynamics. You will also investigate how these processes are affected by the strong bathymetric variations typical for former estuaries, with tidal channels and shoals. Finally, you will assess how these phenomena change under the influence of climate change. To investigate this, you will use a combination of field measurements and numerical modelling, using high-resolution thermistor strings, ADCP's and echosounders and 3D numerical models in Delft3D Flexible Mesh. For more info, look here. The closing date of the vacancy is January 16, 2024. Thanks, Wouter Kranenburg and Julie Pietrzak -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
