Application Deadline is April 3, 2020.
Position Term: This is a 2-year term appointment, with potential for extension.
Relocation: Relocation assistance is available for this position.
Work Authorization: UCAR/NCAR will sponsor a work visa to fill this position.
Where You Will Work:
The Prediction, Assimilation and Risk Communication Section of the Mesoscale and Mircroscale Meteorology Laboratory of NCAR studies advanced techniques for data assimilation and probabilistic weather forecasts, and the intersections between weather hazards and society. Section activities span a wide range of high-resolution applications using both WRF and MPAS as forecast models, assimilation of a variety atmospheric observations, from in-situ measurements to remotely sensed satellite and radar data, and frequent real-time prediction experiments.
What You Will Do
The incumbent will develop and test the tangent linear and adjoint of the Model for Prediction Across Scales (MPAS) and perform additional research and development to advance MPAS data assimilation for cloud, including through four-dimensional variational techniques (4DVar).
Responsibilities:
* Develop the tangent linear and adjoint (TL/AD) of MPAS dynamic core. Parallelize to scale over many processors, in collaboration with MPAS developers. Incorporate existing TL/AD of physics schemes in WRF and/or other models into MPAS.
* Implement and test 4DVar functionality within the framework of the Joint Effort for Data assimilation Integration (JEDI). Compare with other data assimilation algorithms available in MPAS-JEDI DA framework.
* Research toward all-sky satellite data assimilation to improve cloud analyses and forecasts.
* Prepare results for publication in peer-reviewed journals and presentations at meetings and conferences. Prepare and deliver summary reports or project progress reports as needed.
What You Will Need
Education and Years Experience
* Ph.D. degree within the last 5 years in a relevant natural science field.
Desired but not required:
* Experience working in an academic or professional setting with interdisciplinary teams.
Knowledge Skills and Abilities:
* Expertise with MPAS, including modifying MPAS code at various levels.
* Expertise in developing adjoints of complex numerical models.
* Expertise in data assimilation.
* Skill in acquiring, processing and analyzing large datasets of satellite observations, especially for data assimilation.
* Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of an interdisciplinary research team.
* Skill in developing and implementing project plans to meet goals, objectives, and deadlines for deliverables.
* Excellent time management and organization skills.
* Effective written and oral communication skills, both within the field of expertise and across disciplinary boundaries.
* Good programming skills using state-of-the-art scientific languages (e.g. Python, R, MATLAB, Fortran).
Desired but not required:
* Experience in object-oriented programming using C++.
Applicant Notes:
* A pre-employment screening is conducted in conjunction with an offer for employment. This screening may involve verifying or reviewing any of the following relevant information: restricted parties screening, employment verification, performance records of internal candidates, education verification, reference checks, verification of professional licenses, certifications, and Motor Vehicle Records. UCAR complies with the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA).
