General Information
The Department of Biology at James Madison University invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor in Ecosystem Ecology. This is a full-time position with an anticipated, negotiable start date of August, 2020.
The Biology Department at James Madison University currently serves over 1000 undergraduate majors and 19 master’s students. The 55 full time faculty members are engaged in teaching and research in a broad range of sub-disciplines. It offers a wide variety of courses for biology majors, general education and pre-health profession majors, including a 4-semester lab-intensive core curriculum (http://catalog.jmu.edu/preview_program.php?catoid=25&poid=7479&returnto=765). The department houses the Center for Genome and Metagenome Studies (CGEMS) that provides resources to support innovative, leading-edge research and training in the methods and principles of genomics, metagenomics, transcriptomics, and bioinformatics for students at all levels. Duties and Responsibilities
Teaching responsibilities will include introductory biology and ecology & evolution courses that are part of the undergraduate core curriculum and/or courses in the newly established Data Analytics minor. Other teaching responsibilities could include upper level or graduate level courses that are ecology-related and in the candidate’s area of expertise.
Possible research areas include (but are not limited to) climate change, landscape ecology, disease ecology, or environmental systems biology. The Biology Department highly values undergraduate research and mentoring. The successful applicant will be expected to establish a productive and externally funded research program involving undergraduates.


Qualifications
A Ph.D. in a relevant field is required at the time of appointment and post-doctoral experience is preferred, but not required. The ideal candidate will provide quantitative expertise such as mathematical modeling, bioinformatics, machine learning, or data analytics that allow for collaboration within the Biology Department and across the Colleges of Science and Mathematics and Integrated Science and Engineering.
