Water Expert Job Description

Who We Are: The Institute for Ecological Civilization (EcoCiv) is a 501(c)3 non-profit that

works internationally to support systemic approaches to long-term sustainability by

developing collaborations among government, business, and religious leaders and among

scholars, activists, and policy makers. We build effective partnerships across social

sectors through consultations, think-tank gatherings, and policy engagement.

We are currently developing the UNESCO supported “Major Cities Best Practice Water

Protocol” (“the W12 Protocol”), which aims to promote solutions to issues of urban water

scarcity in global cities. The first phase of the project is to research, write, and obtain

feedback from experts on a precursor document, the “W12 Framework.”


The Position:

This is a flat-rate contract position with an immediate start through May 31, 2020 for an

urban water expert who will contribute to the development of the W12 Framework, a

precursor to the “Major Cities Best Practice Water Protocol.” There is a possibility for

ongoing work after May 31, 2020, but this is not guaranteed.

Responsibilities include:

● Aggregating existing open source data and research on urban water issues

● Working with W12 team on creating a set of best practices or solutions to urban

water scarcity challenges

● Working with existing GIS maps and quality control/review of metadata (QGIS)

● Researching, conceptualizing, and formulating urban water best practices, city

water scenarios, and case studies

● Participate and sometimes lead Zoom video conference interviews with water and

policy experts, industry leaders, and city, provincial, and national government

officials around the world

● Compiling concise reports according to specified guidelines and formatting

● Generating content for W12 Framework and W12 Protocol draft

● Working closely with project manager to ensure technical compatibility of

research with public platform


Required experience:

● Graduate degree with specific focus on urban water issues

● QGIS competence

● Detail-oriented and able to adhere to specified format requests

● Long-term, systems-focused, solutions-oriented perspective

● Comfortable with applying insights from multiple sectors to water and other

resources affected by climate change

● Comfortable working in a fast-paced, dynamic environment with an international

team of colleagues and consultants

● Flexible hours (sometimes outside normal working hours due to time zones and the

global reach of our organization)

● Strong and demonstrated written and verbal communication skills

● Strong and demonstrated computer/technology skills

● Strong time management and self-motivation skills

● Able to work remotely

Compensation: Flat rate, equivalent to approximately $25/hour.

Research Assistant Position Job Description

This is an exciting part-time (10-15 hours/week) research assistant position focusing on

the human dimensions of water policy for cities. The successful candidate does not need

to be an expert in hydrology, though they will need to be able to read and comprehend

materials in the environmental sciences and water resources. He or she will be able to

comprehend, synthesize, and write across the multiple sectors relevant to the escalating

water crisis in cities: environmental sciences; city, provincial, and national government

documents; industry and water supply evaluations; intergovernmental agency

recommendations; social science and policy studies; civil society concerns. The output of

the research must be presented in forms that are useful to city leaders around the world.

The post is available immediately and runs through May 31, 2020. This position will

support different research divisions within EcoCiv, initially focusing on contributing to the

development of the W12 Water Protocol and the “W12 Framework.” There is a possibility

for ongoing work after May 31, 2020, but this is not guaranteed.


Responsibilities include:

● Conducting secondary research on urban water issues

● Aggregating and reviewing existing open source data

● Compiling concise reports according to specified guidelines and formatting

● Participating in and taking notes in Zoom video conference interviews

● Synthesizing key points from the interviewees and creating summary documents

within two days of the interview date

● Researching, conceptualizing, and writing up urban water best practices, often in

dialogue with water experts

● Completing and editing existing documents

● Creating case studies based on the experiences of specific cities as they have faced

or are facing water crises

● Fact checking with experts as directed or needed

● Creating, editing, and formatting documents


Required experience:

● Completion of MSc/MA degree or higher in an area related to this research

position or Bachelor’s degree with relevant experience

● Environmental Studies background or policy experience

● Detail-oriented and able to adhere to specified format requests

● Long-term, systems-focused, solutions-oriented perspective

● Comfortable with applying insights from multiple sectors to water and other

resources affected by climate change

● Comfortable working in a fast-paced, dynamic environment with an international

team of colleagues and consultants

● Flexible hours (sometimes outside normal working hours due to time zones and the

global reach of our organization)

● Strong and demonstrated written and verbal communication skills

● Strong and demonstrated computer/technology skills

● Strong time management and self-motivation skills

Preferred experience:

● Doctoral or post-doc research experience

● Some specific experience in water- and/or sanitation-related issues

● QGIS competence

● Experience in other sectors besides water (i.e. agriculture, urban planning, rural

development, energy, etc.)

Compensation: $18/hour
