New Opportunity Jet Propulsion Laboratory (Cal Tech)

New ideas are all around us, but only a few will change the world. That's our focus at JPL. We ask the biggest questions, then search the universe for answers-literally. We build upon ideas that have guided generations, then share our discoveries to inspire generations to come. Your mission-your opportunity-is to seek out the answers that bring us one step closer. If you're driven to discover, create, and inspire something that lasts a lifetime and beyond, you're ready for JPL.

Located at the Table Mountain Facility near Wrightwood, California, JPL's remote facility offers a work environment unlike any other: we inspire passion, foster innovation, build collaboration, and reward excellence.

The Jet Propulsion Laboratory, California Institute of Technology invites applications for a Scientist to design, modify, operate and maintain lidar instruments at the Table Mountain Facility and Mauna Loa Observatory, and to use the lidar measurements to perform scientific studies and publish the results in peer-reviewed scientific journals. This scientist will have opportunities to adapt and develop state-of-the-art techniques in lidar science and technology, in addition to developing new software for data acquisition and analysis from lidar instrumentation. The scientist will be expected to nurture new and strengthen existing research programs in the analysis of the Earth atmospheric composition, and prepare proposals to develop an externally-funded research program. Research focus areas include, but are not limited to, chemical and dynamical processes involving ozone, aerosols, and related substances in the lower and middle atmosphere.

Qualifications:

  * PhD in atmospheric sciences, or related scientific discipline.
  * Strong experimental expertise in the area of lidar instrumentation and design.
  * Strong experience in Python and C programming.
  * Demonstrated experience in conceiving, defining, and conducting self-directed technical and scientific research.
  * A demonstrated professional reputation as a productive researcher with a track record of publications in peer-reviewed journals and technical reports.
  * Excellent oral (including public speaking) and written communication skills, and the ability to work as part of a team.
The following qualifications are preferred:

  *   2-3 years related post-doc experience.
  * A history of writing successful proposals, including observing proposals.
Complete applications will include a cover letter describing the applicant's vision for their role at JPL as a leader and contributor in lidar research, a curriculum vita including a bibliography of refereed and other work, a statement on research experience and research objectives, and contact information for at least three professional references.
Applications received by February 14, 2020 will receive full consideration.
