The Canadian Ice Core Lab is looking for motivated scientists interested in the collection and study of ice cores.
The Canadian Ice Core Lab (CICL) of the Earth and Atmospheric Sciences Department at the University of Alberta is looking for a motivated candidate with field and laboratory experience to coordinate the collection of shallow ice cores from the Snow Dome site on the Columbia Icefield in March 2020, and the collection of a deep ice core from the site in 2021. The successful candidate will also be involved in the collection of freshwater samples downstream of the Columbia Icefield to investigate the effects of contaminant load in glacial run-off to the Athabasca and North Saskatchewan Rivers. The successful candidate will be responsible for running the analyses at CICL (physical core processing, ion chromatography, and oxygen isotope analysis), dating the core records, and evaluating the data set to establish temporal patterns and rates of deposition for the contaminants with the ultimate goal of quantifying glacial-derived contaminant inputs to downstream freshwater ecosystems. Contracted laboratories will analyze the ice core and water samples for a suite of organic contaminants.
Qualifications and Specific Skills
• PhD in glaciology, environmental chemistry, or other relevant field
• Record of publishing in peer-reviewed journals, ideally with a focus on ice core science and/or natural records of environmental contaminants
• Knowledge of environmental transport and fate of organic contaminants
• Field experience in water and/or ice core sample collection
• Ability to work independently and collaboratively
• Ability to work in cold, harsh conditions
• Ability to plan and execute a project from sample collection to scientific publication
• Excellent written, communication and interpersonal skills
Location: Canadian Ice Core Lab (CICL) at the University of Alberta, Edmonton, AB, with some travel to the Columbia Icefield, North Saskatchewan and Athabasca Rivers for sample collection.
