Description

OVERVIEW:

The Curator for Paleontology at The Children's Museum of Indianapolis is
responsible for participating in the development, management, research,
accessions, utilization and presentation of the Museum's paleontological
collections. The incumbent, in congress with colleagues, curates designated
specimens as well as oversees the rotation, utilization and care of
paleontological specimens incorporated into Museum exhibitions, loans,
kiosks, programs and experiences.

REPORTS TO:         Lead Paleontologist & Manager of Natural Science 

 ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

1.     Works to maximize the use and visibility of the collection.
Coordinates displays and exhibits.  Works with staff members to provide
objects and relevant documentation in a timely manner.

2.     Participates in museum-led paleontology excavations working closely
with other natural science and paleontology staff on field acquisition,
planning, purchasing, logistics, and site data collection.

3.     Participates in fossil preparation in the Jurassic and Polly Horton
Hix Paleontology Labs, by transporting, preparing, molding and casting, and
articulating specimens. Assists the Lead Curator in scheduling and teaching
prep skills to staff and volunteers. Presents to and educates visitors about
paleontology lab prep at the public windows on a regular basis.

4.     Completes the processing of specimens into the museum's permanent
collection, including acquisition, object designation, significance,
handling, cataloging, accessioning and deaccessioning, storage, retrieval,
and recording of documentation into collections management computer
database.

5.     Assists with identifying, researching, seeking and acquiring or
borrowing appropriate iconic fossils and specimens for the museum. Works
with internal colleagues to plan, prepare, install and de-install
object-based exhibits.

6.     Works closely with Collections Management and Conservation staff to
assure and recommend collections care, safety, and documentation and to
develop and implement plans for long-term solutions.

7.     Serves as curator and provides content expertise for project/program
planning teams to accurately and appropriately utilize specimens via gallery
programs and temporary, permanent and traveling exhibits, and virtual use of
the collection such as: Dinosphere: You're in Their World and the Lanzendorf
Gallery.

8.     Facilitates access to the collection and utilization of the
collection to advance the mission, vision and strategic plan achievement for
the museum.

9.     Selects, nurtures, mentors and evaluates interns and volunteers
working with Collections.

10.    Presents collections materials through public and professional
presentations, tours, loans, workshops and programs, online resources, and
in the paleontology labs.

 

REQUIREMENTS:

1.     Bachelor's degree in a geoscience field with specialization in
paleontology or related field required; a Master's degree is preferred.

2.     Two (2) years' experience curating museum specimen collections in a
large museum or organization.

3.     Strong organizational skills.

4.     Experience in specimen handling, cataloging, and condition reporting.

5.     Excellent verbal and written communication skills; experience in
public presentations.

6.     Ability to work effectively as a team member within a fast paced
environment that values diversity and inclusion.

7.     Advanced research skills for the development of text for exhibits,
catalogues, publications, and programs, as well as for the identification of
potential acquisitions.

8.     Proficient computer skills, including word processing and database
programs.

9.     Proven experience in working productively and creatively in an
educationally oriented museum focused on children and families.

10.  Applicant must have a valid driver's license and a good driving record.

 

ADA REQUIREMENTS:

1.      Requires the ability to visually identify individuals, write and
read reports, conduct face-to-face conversations.

2.      Requires the ability to communicate clearly with staff, colleagues
and customers by phone.

3.      Requires the ability to hear visitors' and staff responses to
inquiries, information, questions, or concerns.

4.      Requires the ability to negotiate inside the museum physical plant,
as well as traverse uneven terrain for up to eight hours while working on
field digs in hot, arid conditions.

5.      Must be able to lift 50 lbs., climb and bend to reach specimens and
install exhibits. Must be able to sit, keel or stand and endure extreme
outdoor environments and dig sites for extended periods of time.
