Department Chair, Geological Mining & Engineering & Sciences


Job Description Summary

The College of Engineering at Michigan Technological University invites
applications for the position of Chair of the Department of Geological and
Mining Engineering and Sciences to begin on July 1, 2020. The department
currently consists of approximately 12 faculty, 8 technical and
administrative staff, 70 undergraduates, and 51 graduate students. The
department has a strong reputation for teaching and research in a diverse
range of geoscience and geoengineering topics.


Essential Duties & Responsibilities (other duties may be assigned)

The Chair provides direction to the department, including strategic hiring
of faculty, program development, accreditation and assessment, budgetary and
space planning, and carrying out the responsibilities of the department
charter. The Chair will work closely with the Dean of the College to
contribute to the mission and strategic plan of the College and University
with emphasis on:
a) growing the size and diversity of undergraduate and graduate student
programs
b) increasing the impact of research through growth of external funding,
participation of students, scholarship, and professional service
c) increasing funding to support research, scholarship, educational
opportunities and effectiveness, and infrastructural development through
advancement activities with alumni and industry partners
d) communicating and marketing the accomplishments and programs of the
Department.


Required Education, Certifications, Licensures (minimum requirements)

The desired candidate will have an earned doctorate in geological
engineering, geology, geophysics, mining engineering, or a closely related
field that will complement departmental strengths.


Required Experience (minimum requirements)

Candidates at the rank of Professor or Associate Professor are invited to
apply.

The candidate should have a distinguished record of research, a demonstrated
commitment to excellence in teaching, and effective leadership and
communication skills.
