Dear Colleagues,

The Atmospheric Sciences and Global Change Division at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) seeks a postdoctoral research associate to develop novel parameterizations for aerosol-cloud interactions in the Energy Exascale Earth Sytem Model (E3SM; see https://e3sm.org<https://e3sm.org/>) Atmosphere Model (EAM) running at global convection-permitting resolutions, as part of the “Enabling Aerosol-cloud interactions at GLobal convection-permitting scalES (EAGLES)” project (https://climatemodeling.science.energy.gov/projects/enabling-aerosol-cloud-interactions-global-convection-permitting-scales-eagles). The incumbent will work on (1) improving the process representation for aerosols or clouds based on theory, observations, or large-eddy simulations; (2) exploring the use of novel data-model integration techniques such as machine learning or data assimilation to improve model fidelity, reduce error, and identify features; (3) developing methodologies of evaluating EAM at a wide range of temporal and spatial scales using observations of meteorology, radiation, clouds, and aerosol properties; or (4) developing and using a model hierarchy that includes single column model, regionally refined mesh, and global EAM to assess the impact of the new parameterizations on weather and climate. The incumbent will work in close collaboration with atmospheric and computational scientists at PNNL, Sandia National Laboratories, and various universities.

Thanks!
