Job Description

Job Title: Project Scientist III/IV (Research Scientist or Senior Reaearch
Scientist)

 

Location:  Boulder, Co

Type: Full-time, Exempt

Where You Will Work:

Located in Boulder, Colorado, UCAR Community Programs (UCP) offers a suite
of innovative resources, tools, and services for the atmospheric and Earth
science community.  UCP was created in 1992 to manage a number of unique
programs requested by the UCAR community.

 

LAB/PROGRAM INFORMATION

 

What You Will Do:

.        Serves as Lead Application Scientist of the COSMIC Program.
Provides scientific analyses and support for COSMIC-2 and new missions as
needed.

.        Leads the COSMIC Weather, Climate, and Space Weather groups in
scientific investigations and activities related to applications that use
GNSS radio occultation (RO) and other remote sensing data and products

.        Develops methods for application of radio occultation signals for
direct monitoring of the atmosphere, ionosphere, and climate (such as the
boundary layer, tropopause, convection, scintillation, etc.).

.        Manages budget and personnel for science application studies
conducted under the NSF/NASA COSMIC Outyear award. Interfaces with agencies.
Leads the preparation of agency reports.

.        Provides scientific guidance to the COSMIC Program and mentors
other COSMIC scientists.

.        Provides scientific analyses and support for new satellite missions
such as COSMIC-2.

.        Develops science application plan for COSMIC-2 mission to maximize
its scientific impact after launch.

.        Develops new and innovative methods for application of radio
occultation data for direct monitoring of the atmosphere, ionosphere, and
climate.

.        Develops, writes, tests, improves, maintains, and documents
software for scientific applications of radio occultation data.

.        Provides feedback on both the performance characteristics and
shortcomings of COSMIC RO data to RO retrieval experts so they can improve
retrieval algorithms.

.        Provides scientific advice to worldwide user community of COSMIC
data. Serves as an advisor to the international COSMIC data user community.
Provides scientific support to RO collaborators and data users.

.        Represents UCAR at science conferences and workshops in the US and
worldwide. Writes and reviews articles for peer-reviewed scientific
journals.

.        Leads and participates in the development of new funding proposals
and reviews proposals for US agencies.

.        Directly supervises the leads of the Weather, Climate and Space
Weather Science Application Groups.

.        Practices and promotes diversity, equity, and inclusion in the
COSMIC program.

 

What You Need:

Education and Years of Experience:

.        PH.D. in atmospheric science, physics, geophysics, or equivalent,
required.

 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

 

Atmospheric Science and Remote Sensing

.        High level of skill in conducting atmospheric science
investigations with the use of remote sensing data.

.        High level of understanding and skill in atmospheric physics,
models and remote sensing.

 Knowledge/Skills

.        Demonstrated skill in mathematics, inversion techniques,
statistical analysis, time series analysis techniques, differential
equations, integration, complex numbers, and proficiency in numerical
methods.

.        Skill in software development in FORTRAN, C, or other.

.        Working knowledge of UNIX, LINUX, and Windows/NT systems. Is
expected to take a course of action that requires self-motivation and new
and innovative ideas. Will be called upon for authoritative advice regarding
atmospheric science, result interpretation, and issues related to
atmospheric science and radio occultation missions.

Interpersonal Contacts

.        Works regularly with members of the COSMIC team, and as required
with members of NCAR.

.        Is expected to develop/maintain good and productive working
relationship with colleagues at federal labs, the University community,
Taiwanese COSMIC collaborators, and COSMIC data users around the world.

Project Scientist III (Research Scientist):

At least 10 years of experience in field of atmospheric science. Experience
in using GPS occultation data for scientific analysis, and in software
programming. Demonstrated experience in project and personnel management,
giving high quality scientific/technical presentations and writing/reviewing
technical papers.

 

Project Scientist IV (Senior Research Scientist):

At least 15 years of experience in field of atmospheric science. Experience
in using GPS occultation data for scientific analysis, and in software
programming. Demonstrated experience in project and personnel management,
giving high quality scientific/technical presentations and writing/reviewing
technical papers.
