Vacancy Name: IRC72944
Description
Job Title Space & Remote Sensing Postdoctoral Researcher
Location Los Alamos, NM, US
Organization Name ISR-2/Space & Remote Sensing
Minimum Salary
Maximum Salary
What You Will Do
ISR-2 is seeking a qualified Postdoctoral Researcher to execute cutting edge research and development in space-based optical remote sensing with an emphasis on hyperspectral imaging of trace gases from small-satellite platforms. Areas of research and development that the successful candidate will participate in include the following:
* Calibrating, testing, and deploying ultra-compact, high-resolution CubeSat-based hyperspectral imagers, and participating in the operation, target selection, data analysis, and scientific interpretation during the on-orbit space mission of these sensors;
* Developing and validating new algorithms for rapid on-board gas-retrieval processing of space-based hyperspectral imagery;
* Source-to-sensor modeling, including modeling of source physics, atmospheric propagation using tools such as Modtran, and sensor performance modeling;
* Designing and prototyping new spectral imaging technologies, from the ultraviolet through the thermal infrared, with an emphasis on compact, high-performance instruments suitable for space deployment on small satellites;
* Applying spectral remote sensing to a range of basic science and national security applications, including volcanology, atmospheric science, pollution monitoring, and climate science;
* Presenting results in the peer-review literature and at national or international conferences;
* Work within a team environment to develop, test, and evaluate small satellite hardware and software systems.
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
* Demonstrated knowledge and experience in conducting basic and applied research in optics, spectroscopy, and spectral remote sensing, including designing and executing experiments;
* Demonstrated experience with the application of spectral remote sensing to scientific endeavors such as volcanology, atmospheric science, climate science, planetary science, or similar, and in particular to the detection and measurement of dilute gases;
* Working knowledge of optical and infrared detector technologies;
* Demonstrated experience with applied computing to collect, process, analyze, and interpret data, and demonstrable knowledge of one or more scientific programming languages (e.g. Matlab, Igor, Python, C/C++, IDL);
* Ability to interact effectively in a team environment and ability to work independently;
* Ability to express ideas clearly in written and oral communications;
* Ability to conduct field experiments at various national and potentially international locations;
* Demonstrated track record of publishing results in the peer-reviewed literature.
Desired Skills:
* Experience designing and optimizing spectral imaging instrumentation, and in developing novel spectral sensing technologies;
* Hands-on experience in laboratory optical and infrared experimentation, spectroscopy, and radiometric calibration;
* Experience with remote detection and quantification of volcanic gases and in interpreting their geological significance;
* Experience with space instrumentation, especially small-satellite and CubeSat systems, including pre-launch testing, calibration, and qualification;
* Experience with atmospheric radiative transfer modeling, hyperspectral data analysis, and gas retrieval algorithm development;
* Experience with data acquisition and management of large data sets;
* Experience with embedded hardware and software design and development;
* Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q clearance (generally requires U.S. citizenship)
Education: PhD in physics, chemistry, electrical engineering, earth sciences, remote sensing science, or a related field granted within the past 5 years.
Notes to Applicants: In addition to a resume, candidates must submit a cover letter addressing the specific job requirements and desired skills. Applications without this letter will not be considered.
Additional Details:
Position does not require a security clearance. Selected candidates will be subject to drug testing and other pre-employment background checks.
New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing.
Candidates may be considered for a Director's Postdoc Fellowship and outstanding candidates may be considered for the prestigious Richard P. Feynman, Darleane Christian Hoffman, J. Robert Oppenheimer, or Frederick Reines Distinguished Postdoc Fellowships.

Where You Will Work
Located in northern New Mexico, Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is a multidisciplinary research institution engaged in strategic science on behalf of national security. LANL enhances national security by ensuring the safety and reliability of the U.S. nuclear stockpile, developing technologies to reduce threats from weapons of mass destruction, and solving problems related to energy, environment, infrastructure, health, and global security concerns.
The Space & Remote Sensing Group (ISR-2) in the Intelligence & Space Research Division at Los Alamos National Laboratory develops and applies remote sensing capabilities to problems of global security and related sciences. ISR-2 application areas include space-based nuclear detonation detection, space situational awareness, airborne remote sensing, nuclear proliferation detection, atmospheric science, ionospheric physics, planetary science, and astrophysics. ISR-2 capabilities include expertise in source phenomenology, propagation effects, advanced sensor and algorithm development, and laboratory and field experimentation for remote detection challenges primarily in the focus areas of radio-frequency, infrared, and optical regimes. The Group consists of about 45 scientists, engineers, technicians, post-docs, students, and administrative professionals teaming across ISR Division and other LANL organizations to fulfill our various missions.
