Who we are

The  <http://www.iodp.org/> International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP) is
an international research collaboration that coordinates seagoing
<http://iodp.tamu.edu/scienceops/expeditions.html> expeditions to study the
history of the Earth recorded in sediments and rocks beneath the ocean
floor. The JOIDES Resolution Science Operator (JRSO) operates the scientific
drillship  <http://iodp.tamu.edu/publicinfo/drillship.html> JOIDES
Resolution on behalf of the  <http://www.nsf.gov/> National Science
Foundation. We are committed to exceeding the expectations of the scientific
ocean drilling community by maximizing the science the JOIDES Resolution

The Research Specialist III, under general direction is responsible for
promoting the use of the IODP core collections and to conserve the core
collection for future use per the IODP Sample, Data, and Obligations policy.

Required Education and Experience:

.        Bachelors degree or equivalent combination of education and
experience

.        Eight years of related experience


Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

.        Working knowledge of operation of geologic core repositories

.        Excellent communication (oral and written) and interpersonal skills

.        Diplomatic skills in managing issues of concern to the
international science community

.        Ability to promote core collection and its utility

.        Working knowledge of standard office computer hardware and software
applications

.        Must be detail oriented and have the ability to successfully
organize tasks and prioritize work

.        Demonstrated ability to work professionally and harmoniously with
others

.        Be able to work independently

.        Ability to multi-task and work cooperatively with others


Required Licenses, Certifications and Registrations

.        Obtain and hold a passport and appropriate travel visas on a
continuing basis


Other Requirements:

.        This position may be required to sail

.        Seagoing employees must pass a new employee seagoing physical exam
and annual seagoing physical exams

.        This position will not sail routinely but may be required to stand
in if needed, and may be required to be at sea on 2-month expeditions

Preferred Education and Experience:

.        PhD or graduate certification or degree in Earth Science or
relevant field


Responsibilities:

.        Oversee use of JRSO core and sample collections at the Gulf Coast
Repository (GCR) and on the JOIDES Resolution

.        Review, along with the Shipboard Curatorial Specialists, all JRSO
expedition requests, and provide scientific instruction and guidance to the
Shipboard Curatorial Specialists for their role on the Expedition Sample
Allocation Committee (SAC) pre-cruise and during each cruise

.        Serve on Expedition SAC post-cruise, during expedition moratoria,
and review for approval, along with other members of each JRSO Expedition s
SAC, all moratorium requests for core and sample collections at the GCR, BCR
and KCC

.        Provide instructions and scientific and technical guidance to each
repository on fulfilling approved moratorium requests

.        Review for approval all post-moratorium requests for use of core
and materials at the GCR

.        Communicate with requesters to resolve any issues with their
requests

.        Provide instructions and scientific and technical guidance to GCR
staff on fulfilling approved requests

.        Communicate and coordinate approval and sampling of
multi-repository post-moratorium requests with Bremen Core Repository (BCR)
and Kochi Core Center (KCC)

.        Review all JRSO sample/data requests (excluding post-moratorium
requests of JR cores at BCR and KCC) for fulfillment of publication
obligations

.        Create the permanent archive lists for each JRSO IODP site

.        Oversee the IODP Gulf Coast Repository

.        Supervise/coordinate curation staff in sampling and managing the
GCR core collection

.        Develop innovative uses of core collection and repository

.        Coordinate Education and outreach visits in the GCR. Plan for and
develop long-term core storage requirements

.        Responsible for shorebased sampling parties

.        Oversee JRSO XRF scanning facility

.        Supervise/coordinate curation staff in scheduling, measuring and
data management for JRSO expedition XRF scanning projects

.        Perform other duties as assigned
