The School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences (SoMAS) at New York’s Stony Brook University invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor in the field of physical oceanography. We seek a candidate with expertise in process-oriented coastal ocean research, anthropogenic impacts on oceans, and the impacts of climate change on the ocean. The ideal candidate would be an observationalist capable of using the latest generation of modern instrumentation to study coastal dynamics and kinematics and/or able to use regional numerical models to synthesize and interpret information gained from observations. 

The successful candidate is expected to develop a vigorous, externally funded research program, maintain a strong publication record, advise graduate students, and provide outstanding teaching of undergraduate and graduate courses. SoMAS is an international leader in marine and atmospheric sciences – and leads interdisciplinary investigations on regional coastal and global ocean challenges. We seek a collaborative and productive scientist who will strengthen SoMAS’s research enterprise by providing a physical basis for understanding threats to the coastal environment—including habitat change, hypoxia, harmful algal blooms, storm surges and sea level rise and coastal erosion—and maintain and expand collaborations within SoMAS (e.g., with fisheries, biologists, chemists, and/or meteorology) and with local stakeholders, as well as foster collaboration with scholars across the Stony Brook University community to support identification of sustainable solutions for marine environments.

Applications will be accepted through November 30th. The anticipated start date is September 1, 2020. 

Qualifications
Required:   Candidates must have a Ph.D. (or foreign equivalent) in physical oceanography or a closely related field in hand no later than August 31, 2020. Experience teaching at the college level.  Capacity to teach undergraduate and graduate courses in physical oceanography.

Preferred: An observationalist capable of using the latest generation of modern instrumentation and/or able to use regional numerical models to synthesize and interpret information gained from observations. Research/teaching experience relevant to issues of physical oceanography.  Demonstrated excellence in teaching undergraduate or graduate courses in physical oceanography or closely related topics.  Experience with course and curriculum development.  Experience mentoring undergraduate and/or graduate students. 

Demonstrated excellence in research related to physical oceanography or closely related topics, and a compelling agenda for future research.  Experience obtaining and managing external research funding.  Experience and interest working in multi-disciplinary or trans-disciplinary environments.  Potential for collaboration within the School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences to advance its research mission.
