[ES_JOBS_NET] PhD Position in Snow/Firn/Ice Studies at the University of Nevada, Reno

I am seeking potential graduate students (PhD) to join my lab (www.kaitlinkeegan.com) at the University of Nevada, Reno, starting in the fall semester of 2020. We are a geological engineering lab that studies a range of ice-related topics, including:

	1. Physical properties of firn

	2. Firn densification processes

	3. Physical properties of glacial ice

	4. Ice deformation

	5. Seasonal snow

	6. Interpretation of paleoclimate records from ice 

Understanding the processes underlying snow, firn, and ice evolution allows for better interpretation of paleoclimate records from ice. Ultimately, these ice core records are extremely important for understanding how Earth’s climate system has changed in the past and also how it may change in the future due to anthropogenic climate change.

I am looking for enthusiastic, self-motivated students who are interested in exploring these or similar topics. I am particularly interested in students with experience and/or interest in conducting field work locally in the Sierra Nevada or in the polar regions.

The application deadline is January 1st, 2020. Thus, students must contact me by December 1st, 2019, so that we have time to communicate and establish compatibility prior to the application deadline.

UNR is Nevada’s flagship, land-grant institution, and has world-class facilities. It is a tier 1 (R1) university, meaning an institution with “very high research activity” as classified by the Carnegie Institution. Reno itself is a wonderful place to live. It is sandwiched between the Sierra Nevada mountains to the west and the Great Basin Desert to the east, providing ample opportunity for hiking, camping, biking, skiing, and mountain climbing. Reno is only a 30-minute drive from Lake Tahoe, and only a few hours’ drive from both San Francisco and Yosemite National Park.
