Postdoctoral Position in Boundary Layer Cloud Processes

A postdoctoral position is available with the UCLA Joint Institute for
Regional Earth System Science and Engineering (JIFRESSE). The main focus of
the position is a joint UCLA/JPL project on the evolution of precipitating
boundary layer clouds. Lessons learned from an observational analysis will
be applied in an eddy-diffusivity mass-flux scheme, a unified
parameterization of turbulence, convection and microphysics for numerical
models of the atmosphere that is currently being implemented at a number of
major climate modeling centers. Other potential topics of interest include
scale sensitivity of microphysical processes and validation of remote
sensing retrievals using collocated aircraft observations. The selected
candidate will have ample opportunity to collaborate with JPL and UCLA
scientists involved in satellite remote sensing and climate model
parameterization development.

Applicants should have a Ph.D. in Atmospheric Sciences or a closely related
field. The successful candidate should demonstrate effective oral and
written communication, strong programming skills and self-motivation. A
background in remote sensing is desirable but not required; more
importantly, we seek an ambitious candidate with the desire to learn new
techniques and perform integrative research that synthesizes use of models
and observations.

Applicants should submit a cover letter and complete CV, including contact
information for three references. Inquiries and application materials
should be addressed to Dr. Mikael Witte (mkwitte at ucla.edu). The position is
available immediately and applications will be reviewed on an ongoing basis
until the position is filled.
