The Max-Planck-Institute for Biogeochemistry (MPI-BGC) in Jena, Germany,
is seeking to fill the position of a

*Research associate (Post-doc) for high-latitude carbon cycle modeling
(m/f/d)*

This is a full-time post-doctoral position to be filled immediately, but
not later than March 2020, with current funding guaranteed for a
duration of 24 months (extension possible). Salary will be according to
the German TVöD (E13) scale, depending on experience, including social
benefits. The detailed position announcement can be downloaded here:
https://oc.bgc-jena.mpg.de/index.php/s/Ovn9AYBvEzVTuhr

The successful candidate will join an interdisciplinary research group
at MPI-BGC that is conducting experimental, observational and modeling
studies focusing on the Arctic carbon cycle under global climate change.
The main focus of the announced position will be placed on investigating
the current and future limitations by micro-nutrients on Arctic carbon
cycle processes using the terrestrial ecosystem model JSBACH. A
particular focus will be placed on the roles of silicon and calcium on
carbon fixation and turnover rates, and how they may change with future
shifts in nutrient pools linked to increased thaw depths. Model
performance will be tested against reference datasets from laboratory
and in-situ observational studies that examined a wide range of soil
conditions from multiple Arctic regions.

Candidates with a higher education degree (ideally PhD) in
environmental, natural or computational sciences are eligible for this
position. Demonstrated experience in running Earth System Models, or
equivalent biogeochemical/biogeophysical modeling frameworks, for
scientific purposes is considered highly desirable. Experience in
scientific programming, solving numerical problems, and operating UNIX
system environments is a strong plus. Some background in one or more of
the following fields is considered beneficial: i) Arctic ecology; ii)
carbon cycle science; iii) soil sciences.
