* Associate Scientist III - Hydrometeorological Modeling Data Analysis
*

Work Authorization: U.S. Citizenship, Permanent Residency, or other protected status under 8 U.S.C. 1324b(a)(3) is required for this position.
UCAR/NCAR will not sponsor a work visa (e.g., J-1, H1-B, etc.) for this position.
Relocation: No relocation package is offered for this position.
Application Deadline: Position will be posted for 3 weeks or until this position has been filled.

Where You Will Work:

Located in Boulder, Colorado, the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) is one of the world's premier scientific institutions, with an internationally recognized staff and research program dedicated to advancing knowledge, providing community-based resources, and building human capacity in the atmospheric and related sciences. NCAR is sponsored by the National Science Foundation (NSF) and managed by the University Corporation for Atmospheric Research (UCAR).

The Research Applications Laboratory is one of seven laboratories within NCAR<https://ncar.ucar.edu/who-we-are/labs>. Its mission is to conduct directed research that contributes to fundamental understanding of the atmosphere and related physical, biological, and social systems; to support, enhance, and extend the capabilities of the scientific community; and to develop and transfer knowledge and technology for the betterment of life on Earth.

The main goal of the Hydrometeorological Applications Program is to provide relevant information to high-impact weather, flood warning, and water resource decision makers through directed and basic research and development in hydrometeorology, aerosol-precipitation interactions, very short term precipitation nowcasting, cloud microphysical modeling, and winter weather.

What You Will Do: This is a new two-year term position. The new hire will work as part of an NCAR/RAL team of scientists and engineers to support 1) collection, organization, and analysis of hydrometeorological data from radar, numerical models, precipitation gauges, stream gauges and other field instrumentation, 2) hydrologic forecast execution and verification from hydrometeorological (numerical weather prediction, nowcasting and rainfall-runoff) models, and 3) implementation and execution of meteorological and hydrological models for a variety of hydrometeorological forecasting applications.

Responsibilities:
* Conducts hydrometeorological analyses of multiple hydrometeorological data products (e.g. radar, satellite, numerical weather prediction models, sounding data, snowpack, soil moisture, inundation, streamflow data) as a basis for quantifying skill and uncertainty in hydrologic predictions.
* Performs basic hydrologic model experiments using the WRF-Hydro/National Water Model system to assess the impact different meteorological forcing datasets and land surface characterization datasets on hydrologic simulation and prediction skill.
* Collects and analyzes radar, disdrometer and in situ hydrometeorological surface station data for improving the characterization of precipitation phase (solid vs. liquid) and intensity in complex terrain.
* Presents research results with program sponsors at scientific conferences and meetings, and in reports and journal articles.
* Develops and/or assesses physically-based and statistically-based precipitation, temperature, humidity, wind and incoming radiation downscaling methodologies as tools for preparing input data for hydrologic prediction models.
* Works with a diverse academic and federal agency team of hydrometeorologists on the improvement of meteorological forcing data for use in the NOAA National Water Model.

DECISION MAKING&PROBLEM SOLVING - i.e., types of problems that are solved independently
* Ability to develop and implement scientific methods related to achieving the goals of a project using past experience and general scientific research skills.
* Ability to diagnose and resolve problems in the hydrometeorological model simulations with general guidance through the development/implementation of post-processing scripts, analysis programs, graphical displays, and statistical tools.
* Ability to work independently in remote field research environments

What You Need:

Education and Years of Experience:
* Bachelor's degree in atmospheric science, meteorology, hydrometeorology, or closely related field with 5-8 years scientific experience; which includes, 4-6 years experience in hydrometeorological research and

applications; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
* Strongly desired: Advanced degree in a related discipline.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
* Advanced skill in working with radar, surface meteorological station data, streamflow, snowpack, soil moisture, inundation data, hydrologic model data and numerical weather prediction data
* Advanced skill in processing large datasets in a variety of different data formats (ASCII, GRIB, or NetCDF).
* Demonstrated skill in analyzing hydrometeorological model output and verification statistics
* Strong programming skills in data analysis software packages (Python-preferred, R-desired, basic shell scripting)
* Proficiency in working with hydrologic models such as WRF-Hydro
* Familiarity with the set up and operate automated hydrometeorological field research instrumentation
* Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a collaborative environment with scientists and operational hydrometeorological forecasters
* Strong oral and written communication skills as demonstrated by a record of presenting scientific results, and writing reports and papers.
* Demonstrated ability to work effectively on a team of scientists and engineers to complete a complex project goal
* Demonstrated ability to complete large projects as well as smaller assignments on schedule with minimal supervision

Desired but not required:
* Skill in analyzing atmospheric sounding data
* Skill in running the Weather Research and Forecasting model
* Skill in using the Model Evaluation Tookit (MET) and/or Rwrfhydro statistical evaluation software packages
* Remote/cold weather travel and work experience
