Postdoctoral Associate/Senior Postdoctoral Associate - 1901266
The School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences at Stony Brook University
invites applications for the Postdoctoral Associate/Senior Postdoctoral
position. The title/rank will be contingent upon the selected candidate's
skills and experience in their area of expertise.
Postdoctoral Associate
Required Qualifications (as evidenced by an attached resume):
Ph.D.(or foreign equivalent) in hand by September 2019.
Senior Postdoctoral Associate
Required Qualifications (as evidenced by an attached resume):
Ph.D.(or foreign equivalent) in hand by September 2019. Three years of
full-time related research experience.
Preferred Qualifications:
PhD (or foreign equivalent) in Atmospheric Science Meteorology or closely
related field. Experience in the use of cloud radars for the study of cloud
and precipitation microphysics and dynamics. Expertise in the analysis of
profiling and scanning millimeter wavelength radar observations. Expertise
in development of comprehensive cloud and hydrometeor type classifications
using an array of active and passive remote sensors. Experience in research
combining modeling and observational data, and analysis of active/passive
remote-sensing observations and/or high-resolution modeling. Programming
experience.
Brief Description (Postdoctoral Associate):
The Postdoctoral Associate (PDA) is expected to conduct research intended to
improve our understanding of shallow clouds using a combination of modeling
and observations from the Eastern North Atlantic site of the DOE Atmospheric
Radiation Measurement program. The PDA is expected to contribute and, in
many ways, coordinate research activities for the study of cloud and
precipitation microphysics and dynamics within a large multi-institutional
team with research from U. of Washington, Rutgers University, Brookhaven
National Laboratory and Stony Brook University. A successful candidate will
have excellent communication skills with an ability to conduct independent,
novel research.
Postdoctoral Associate Duties
. Analysis of comprehensive ground-based observations from the
Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) Eastern Northern Atlantic (ENA) site
for the study of clouds and associated precipitation
. Develop novel methods for interfacing models and observations for
the study of marine boundary layer clouds
. Lead the preparation, writing and publication of scientific
manuscripts in peer-reviewed journals
. Other duties or projects as assigned.
Brief Description of Duties (Senior Postdoctoral Associate):
The Senior Postdoctoral Associate will conduct research intended to improve
our understanding of shallow clouds using a combination of modeling and
observations from the Eastern North Atlantic site of the DOE Atmospheric
Radiation Measurement program. The senior postdoc is expected to coordinate
and, in many ways, lead research activities for the study of cloud and
precipitation microphysics and dynamics within a large multi-institutional
team with research from U. of Washington, Rutgers University, Brookhaven
National Laboratory and Stony Brook University. Successful candidate will
have strong written and verbal communication skills with an ability to
conduct independent, novel research.
Senior Postdoctoral Associate Duties:
. Analyze and synthesize measurements from a number of active and
passive sensors from the ARM ENA observatory. Develop novel methods for
interfacing models and observations for the study of marine boundary layer
clouds.
. Support Large Eddy Simulations (LES) of low-level cloud systems to
study the role of cloud-scale dynamics on the cloud evolution and the
representation of drizzle growth processes (autoconversion and accretion) in
LES simulations using the ARM ENA observations.
. Write manuscripts for publication.
. Write and submit proposals for external support.
. Other duties or projects as assigned.
Special Notes:
This is a full-time appointment. The Research Foundation of SUNY is a
private educational corporation. Employment is subject to the Research
Foundation policies and procedures, sponsor guidelines and the availability
of funding. FLSA Exempt position, not eligible for the overtime provisions
of the FLSA. Minimum salary threshold must be met to maintain FLSA
exemption.

About Stony Brook:
Stony Brook University, home to many highly ranked graduate research
programs, is located 60 miles from New York City on Long Island's scenic
North Shore. Our 1,100-acre campus is home to 24,000 undergraduate,
graduate, and doctoral students and more than 13,500 faculty and staff,
including those employed at Stony Brook Medicine, Suffolk County's only
academic medical center and tertiary care provider. The University is a
member of the prestigious Association of American Universities and
co-manager of nearby Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL), a
multidisciplinary research laboratory supporting world class scientific
programs utilizing state-of-the-art facilities such as the Relativistic
Heavy Ion Collider, the National Synchrotron Light Source, and the Center
for Functional Nanomaterials, and the New York Blue IBM BG/L+P
supercomputer, owned by Stony Brook and managed by BNL. Stony Brook is a
partner in managing the Laboratory for the Department of Energy, and is the
largest institutional scientific user of BNL facilities. As such, many
opportunities exist for collaborative research, and in some cases, joint
appointments can be arranged.
