Hydrogeology Research Scientist

Berkeley Lab’s Energy Geosciences Division has an opening for a Career Track Hydrogeologist

Incumbent in this position will conduct research and develop new approaches to numerical modeling studies of geomechanics and fluid flow and transport in saturated and unsaturated soils, porous, and fractured media. The Energy Geosciences Department staff conduct research to meet the needs of various projects for the Department of Energy in the areas of nuclear waste disposal, environmental management, fossil energy, geological carbon sequestration, geothermal reservoir engineering, climate change, and basic energy sciences.

What You Will Do:

· Conduct research and develop new approaches to numerical modeling studies of geomechanics, fluid flow, and transport in unsaturated and saturated soils, porous and fractured rock systems.

· Participate as a member of a multi-disciplinary team to develop advanced theories and numerical techniques to address outstanding problems in the fields of hydrogeology and reservoir engineering.

· Research interests focusing on the development of new numerical methods, development of new computational tools, and breakthroughs in computational geoscience preferred. Emphasis will be on developments that contribute to addressing issues of national or international concern, such as nuclear waste disposal, environmental management, fossil energy, geological carbon sequestration, geothermal reservoir engineering, climate change, uncertainty quantification, and basic energy sciences. Author or co-author scientific reports and peer-reviewed journal articles.

· Present research results at conferences and meetings, with the scientific community and for the Dept. of Energy and other funding agencies. Provide technical supervision of junior staff (postdocs, GSRAs, research associates).

· Seek funding opportunities, participate in developing new research initiatives, and collaborate with investigators in other fields such as fluid dynamics, geochemistry, geophysics, geology, applied mathematics, and climate.

What is Required:

· A Ph.D. (or equivalent work experience) in the sciences, mathematics, or engineering. Expertise in mechanical, chemical, environmental engineering, and/or applied mathematics required. Specific fields of work include hydrogeology, hydrology, petroleum engineering, chemical engineering, soil physics, geomechanics, and related fields.

· Experience conducting independent research and working on multidisciplinary teams.

· High level of programming skill is required, with fluency in Python, C/C++, and other modern languages. Experience with numerical methods, general scientific computing, software design, and experience with High Performance Computing environments.

· Extensive knowledge of the geomechanics of the subsurface as applied to numerical simulation. Substantial knowledge of geology, hydrology, or related earth science, chemistry, or related engineering fields.

· Ability to compile and analyze research data accurately using a range of tools; able to create charts, slides, and other presentation materials.

· Strong verbal and written communication skills, including demonstrated ability to initiate and contribute to technical papers and proposals, and to collaborate with other scientists and researchers

Additional Desired Qualifications:

· Knowledge of Theoretical Data Structures and Algorithms

· Numerical analysis and applied mathematics

· Reservoir engineering, reservoir simulation

· Machine learning/AI methods

The posting shall remain open until the position is filled.

Notes:

· Appointment Type:

o Career Track Appointment - This is a full time 1-year career-track term appointment that may be renewed to a maximum of five years and that may be converted to career based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds, and ongoing operational needs.

o Classification will depend upon the applicant's level of skills, knowledge, and abilities. (For dual postings - add this to the position summary at the end of the paragraph) This position will be filled at the [JOB TITLE] or [JOB TITLE] level, dependent on experience.

· Work Schedule:

o Full-time, M-F, exempt (monthly paid) from overtime pay.

· Background Check:

o This position may be subject to a background check. Any convictions will be evaluated to determine if they directly relate to the responsibilities and requirements of the position. Having a conviction history will not automatically disqualify an applicant from being considered for employment.

· Work will be primarily performed at:

o Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, 1 Cyclotron Road, Berkeley, CA.
