Position Summary:
University of Alaska Fairbanks Institute of Northern Engineering Water and Environmental Research Center is seeking a motivated and energetic post-doctoral scholar to work on projects at the intersection of, and spanning the fields of, Arctic System Sciences, Geography, Remote Sensing, and Hydrology. Candidates will be evaluated on suitability of their academic preparation and past research experience.

The responsibilities include: conducting analysis of multidimensional remote sensing datasets, performing spatial and temporal analysis across regional and continental scales, performing field-based research, managing large geospatial databases, publishing results in peer-reviewed journals, writing proposals to submit to funding agencies, and helping supervise graduate students' research. Projects will also require the ability to maintain confidentiality and work on multiple tasks. There may be additional duties assigned as it relates to this position.

UAF is a Land, Sea, and Space Grant university, the world leader in Arctic research, and a Carnegie Doctoral University. Established as the original site of the University of Alaska Fairbanks in 1917, UAF is a multi-campus university based in Fairbanks, the state's second largest city, with seven extended campuses spanning two-thirds of the state. Fairbanks, a modern and close community with approximately 100,000 residents, is located in Interior Alaska between the Alaska and Brooks mountain ranges and is noted for its scope of unique outdoor activities (hunting, fishing, five months of Nordic skiing in the winter, and aurora gazing).

INE is the research arm of the College of Engineering and Mines (CEM) at UAF. It has several distinct research centers and provides facilities and support to dozens of researchers working in conjunction with CEM. INE is the home to many of the world's leading researchers in cold weather and cold climate science and engineering. WERC conducts basic and applied research related to water and environmental resources. WERC research aims to help improve the quality of life for arctic inhabitants while supporting careful and sustainable development of Alaska's bountiful natural resources, protecting fragile ecosystems, and seeking to better understand the role of the arctic and subarctic in the global system. Included within the Institute are natural scientists, social scientists, and anthropologists all of who contribute significantly to the ability of WERC to address societal issues.

The required qualification is a PhD degree in Geography, Geosciences, GIScience, or Earth System Sciences with a focus on northern high latitude regions. The successful candidate will have a strong background in the area of remote sensing, GIS, landscape-scale studies, and strong experience in integrating field studies and sensor observations with remote sensing data. Additionally, communication and outreach efforts bridging the gap between science and the general public is desired. The candidate must have experience publishing in peer-reviewed journals and be eager to conduct multidisciplinary research. Should have ability to pay close attention to detail, work in an organized manner, follow instructions and work without close supervision.
