Assistant Professor of Geology
Position Announcement
The Department of Physical Sciences and the Lyman Southwest Geological
Science Center at Dixie State University in St. George, UT invite
applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Geology position to
begin August 2019 or January 2020. The preferred candidate will possess a
Ph.D. in Geology or a related discipline, particularly with experience in
sedimentology/stratigraphy and/or Earth materials. Applicants who are ABD
are also encouraged to apply. The successful candidate will be expected to
teach and develop upper-level courses in sedimentology/stratigraphy and/or
Earth materials with a strong field component, in addition to teaching
introductory-level geology courses.
The Physical Sciences department encompasses courses in Chemistry,
Environmental Science, Geography, Geology, Physics, and Engineering. More

Responsibilities
. Teach 24 credits of lecture and laboratory courses each academic
year.
. Teach courses in sedimentology/stratigraphy and/or Earth materials
plus courses in the applicant's field of expertise, as well as general
education geology and related fields.
. Involve undergraduate students in research and
experiential-learning projects.
. Contribute to the developing programs and emphases in Geology,
Geoscience, and Environmental Science.
. Serve on institutional and departmental committees as assigned.
. Advise students on general education and discipline-specific
requirements.
. Attend department, division, and college faculty meetings; work
with other faculty in program management; and adhere to university policies.
Qualifications
. Ph.D. in Geology or closely related discipline from an accredited
college or university is required. Applicants who are ABD will also be
considered.
. Research or teaching background in sedimentology/stratigraphy
and/or Earth materials, or related field.
. Ability to teach sedimentology/stratigraphy and/or Earth materials,
plus courses in the applicant's field of expertise.
. Evidence of potential for successful teaching at the college level.
. Interest and expertise must be in teaching at the college level,
along with potential interest in developing undergraduate research programs
related to geology, geoscience, and environmental science.
. Interest in field experiences and technology as educational tools.
. Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal skills.
. Willingness to work with and assist adjunct laboratory instructors.
. An eagerness to engage with colleagues, staff, and administrators
to develop ways to improve the educational experiences of our students.
. Postdoctoral experience preferred, but not required.
Supplemental Information
CONTRACT: Full-time (9-month) tenure-track faculty position. Pay & benefits
begin August 16 if hired for Fall Semester; pay & benefits begin January 1,
2020 if hired for Spring Semester. Annual salary of $55,000+, depending on
qualifications & experience; additional compensation available for
