Preparing for an Academic Career in the Geosciences workshop at the Earth
Educators Rendezvous

Dear Friends and Alumni of the Career Prep Workshop,

Please share the information below with anyone who may be interested in
learning more about an academic career in the geosciences. Since 2003, the
Preparing for an Academic Career in the Geosciences workshop has provided
mentoring for over 1,000 participants, including guidance on different
types of institutions and jobs, how to navigate the job search process, and
strategies for being successful as teachers and researchers. The workshop
is appropriate for those in graduate school, post-doctoral positions, or
actively on the job market.

Travel stipends are available (apply by April 7).

Thank you for spreading the word!

-Lisa

The main *goals * of the workshop are for participants to improve their
application and interview skills for academic jobs, become more effective
at goal-setting and time management, and broaden their network (of
colleagues and resources) to help jump-start their teaching and research as
a faculty member.

During the workshop and associated Rendezvous opportunities, each
participant will:

   - Learn about academic careers in different educational settings (e.g.,
two-year colleges, primarily undergraduate institutions, universities).
   - Develop a plan for your next career stage. Set goals to move toward
   that plan.
   - Learn about the job search process and improve your job applications:
learn about documenting strengths and accomplishments in teaching and
research, and develop or revise your teaching and research statements.
   - Improve your communication skills: the elevator pitch and interviews.
   - Explore aspects of effective and innovative teaching. Make your own
selections from Monday-Wednesday afternoon Rendezvous workshops and
sessions. These are open to you and included in registration.

This workshop is designed specifically for graduate students, post-doctoral
fellows, and others who are interested in pursuing academic careers in the
geosciences (including geology, geochemistry, geophysics, atmospheric
sciences, oceanography, geography, environmental science, and other allied
disciplines). For the fourth year in a row, the workshop will be offered at
the Earth Educators' Rendezvous
<https://serc.carleton.edu/earth_rendezvous/2019/index.html?serc_source=track_-20190326-g1gjpctt6f24xol9>.
After each morning session, workshop participants can engage in lunchtime
discussions with senior colleagues and then choose from afternoon
workshops, panels, and plenary sessions that are part of the Earth
Educators' Rendezvous. Participants can also register for Thursday-Friday
programming.
