Job Description
Job Title: Postdoctoral Fellow 1
Location: Boulder, Colorado
Type: Full-time, Exempt
Position Term: 1-year term date, with the possibility of extension
Application Deadline:
This position will be posted until March 25th. Thereafter, applications will be reviewed on an as-needed basis.
Relocation: No relocation package is offered for this position.
Work Authorization: UCAR/NCAR will sponsor a work visa to fill this position.
Where You Will Work:
Located in Boulder, Colorado, the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) is one of the world's premier scientific institutions, with an internationally recognized staff and research program dedicated to advancing knowledge, providing community-based resources, and building human capacity in the atmospheric and related sciences. NCAR is sponsored by the National Science Foundation (NSF) and managed by the University Corporation for Atmospheric Research (UCAR).
What You Will Do:
This is a new, full-time, 1-year term position with possibility of extension for a post-doctoral research fellow at NCAR. The new hire will perform applied research focusing on the development of gridded ensemble multi-sensor analysis datasets (long-term retrospective and real-time analyses) for use in a broad range of hydrometeorological modeling applications. NCAR has created unique ensemble gridded, decades-long and real-time daily meteorological (precipitation and temperature) analyses for the continental US, Alaska and Hawaii, using in situ station observations from a variety of networks. The post-doc will enhance this project through the application of statistical techniques to fuse satellite and atmospheric model-based surface meteorological fields (e.g., from NWP or WRF) into the ensemble products, and to develop and test new methods for application to existing gridded, multivariate meteorological products (such as NLDAS). The work will leverage and enhance a recently developed NCAR software, the Gridded Meteorological Ensemble Tool (GMET), and support a wide range of applications including climate change analysis and hydrological modeling and prediction. The position is within the Hydrometeorological Applications Program of the NCAR Research Applications Laboratory. The work includes potential linkages to similar efforts with a North American and global extent, and to collaborating partners at other institutions in the US and Canada.
Responsibilities:
* Upgrade GMET and associated ensemble forcing products to incorporate gridded meteorological fields, and develop techniques to apply GMET's spatial regression approaches to estimate uncertainty in existing gridded datasets. The effort in involves statistical method development, code development (GMET is written in FORTRAN), application to generate large-domain, meteorological analysis (forcing) datasets for the community, using high performance computing resources such as CISL's Cheyenne and Casper clusters, and diagnostic evaluation of the datasets.
Communicate research results to stakeholders, sponsors and the community through publication in peer-reviewed journals, meeting proceedings, and presentations at scientific meetings. Assist in the preparation of project reporting materials and responses to opportunities for related research funding.
What You Need:
Education and Years of Experience:
* Ph.D. degree in atmospheric, meteorological or hydrological sciences, or a relevanet discipline (e.g., geospatial statistics)
* Demonstrated record of research and publication
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
* In-depth knowledge of surface meteorological analyses, NWP and mesoscale model outputs, and/or distributed hydrologic modeling.
* Skill in developing, implementing and analyzing statistical techniques related to meteorological variables.
* Ability to conduct graphical and statistical analyses of multi-dimensional datasets (time, space, variable, ensemble).
* Ability to establish and maintain a nationally recognized publication record.
* Ability to participate in and interact productively with hydrometeorological analysis and prediction groups, statisticians and scientists at NCAR and among the hydrometeorological modeling and prediction community.
* Strong skills in written and oral communication of research results, including in an interdisciplinary context.
* Desired technical/computational skills:
oStrong competence with data, program and file management in UNIX/Linux
oStrong competence in FORTRAN
oDemonstrated skill in working with large and heterogeneous datasets
oDemonstrated skill in managing large computationally intensive model simulations
oCompetence with analysis and scripting in R, Python and UNIX /Linux shell
oFamiliarity with GIS or GIS-equivalent (e.g., gdal/ogr)
oFamiliarity with code sharing environments such as Github.
oFamiliarity with super-computing environments (e.g., computing clusters).
What's in it for You:
* Compensation
* PTO
* Paid Holidays
* Tuition Reimbursement
* Benefits (Medical, Dental, Vision)
* Retirement Plan
* And more!
