Assistant Professor - Coastal Ecosystems and Watersheds, University of
Florida

University of Florida: College of Agricultural and Life Sciences: 60460000 -
AG-SCHL-FOREST RES / CONSERV

Location

Gainesville, FL

Open Date

Mar 7, 2019

Description

This is a 9-month tenure-accruing position that will be 70% research
(Florida Agricultural Experiment Station) and 30% extension (Florida
Cooperative Extension Service), available in the School of Forest Resources
and Conservation, Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences, at the
University of Florida. This assignment may change in accordance with the
needs of the unit. Duties will include research and extension interests
related to coastal ecosystems and their watersheds. Tenure will accrue in
the School of Forest Resources and Conservation, Institute of Food and
Agricultural Sciences, at the University of Florida. The faculty member
will participate actively in undergraduate education and graduate education
by chairing graduate committees, serving on graduate committees, supervising
thesis and dissertation research, supervising undergraduate research, and
publishing the results with his/her graduate students. The faculty member
will seek contract and grant funding actively to support his/her program.
The faculty member will engage in Extension activities in his or her program
area.

The position represents an important component of a growing programmatic
emphasis at UF and IFAS on marine environments, and supports one of the
nation’s largest and most impactful Sea Grant programs. A cluster of related
positions has been and will be filled as IFAS seeks to enhance its
world-class sustainable fisheries and coastal ecology programs, as well as
expanding an international role for the newly formed Institute for
Sustainable Food Systems. IFAS and Florida Sea Grant are also focused on
broader inter-disciplinary efforts (i.e. IFAS, other UF units, academic
institutions, local/state federal agencies and the private sector) to
address the challenges to the integrity of coastal ecosystems associated
with land influences. This position is thus part of an integrated,
interdisciplinary initiative to support the sustainable management and use
of scarce state, regional, and international marine resources.

The desired focus of the position is the influence of land-sea interactions
on the well-being and sustainability of coastal natural resources and
communities. These interactions relate to a wide range of challenges facing
Florida’s coastal environment, including harmful algal blooms,
eutrophication, hypoxia, climate change, sea level rise, pollutants,
hydrologic and physical alterations, and habitat losses. These and other
challenges, in turn, affect coastal resources and communities, including
fisheries, tourism, property values, recreational activities, natural hazard
risks and human health.

The successful candidate will develop, coordinate, and implement a
science-based and user-driven coastal watershed extension and research
program. The candidate will identify and clarify challenges facing coastal
systems, including land influences, and participate in the development of
novel approaches for the management and mitigation of these challenges. The
candidate’s extension program shall be developed in consultation with key
stakeholders and constituencies and enhanced through the development and
application of a complementary applied research program. The candidate will
develop a research program motivated by community needs with collaborative
partners and will provide hands-on technical support and training for
targeted stakeholders. The candidate is expected to collaborate with
multi-disciplinary UF/IFAS faculty and provide program leadership within the
Florida Sea Grant College Program, including effectively interacting with
extension agents in coastal counties.

Applications are encouraged from the full breadth of disciplines involved in
the study of coastal environments and their watersheds. Regardless of
disciplinary background, the applicant should possess an excellent skill set
and research record in their discipline and a demonstrated interest in and
aptitude for interdisciplinary applied research. The applicant should also
have strong interpersonal and communication skills, and the motivation to
work in multidisciplinary teams. The successful candidate will be expected
to secure external funding to support his/her research and extension
programs, publish in appropriate disciplinary and interdisciplinary national
and international journals, and thus develop nationally recognized research
and extension programs. The faculty member will participate actively in
graduate education by chairing graduate committees, serving on graduate
committees, supervising thesis and dissertation research, supervising
undergraduate research, and publishing the results with his/her graduate
students.

Tenure will accrue in the School of Forest Resources and Conservation
(Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences Program). Because of the IFAS land-grant
mission, all faculty are expected to be supportive of and engaged in all
three mission areas—Research, Teaching and Extension—regardless of the
assignment split specified in the position description.
