Summary of the role
These positions sit in the Products Team within the Production Section of the Forecast Department and both post holders will report to the Products Team Leader.
The Products Team manages the services to access ECMWF’s data products, including observations, analysis and forecast data, for the benefit of its Member and Cooperating States and the wider meteorological community. The team is responsible for ECMWF’s Meteorological Archival and Retrieval System (MARS), a multi-petabyte storage system, considered to be one of the largest repositories of meteorological data worldwide. The team is heavily involved in the acquisition, archiving and serving of several public datasets, such as TIGGE/S2S. The Products Team is also responsible for managing the time-critical system to generate tailored real-time products that are disseminated to users and It plays a leading role in Data Governance activities, ensuring a coherent view of all the data used and produced at ECMWF.
Working closely with the rest of the team, both analysts will be required to contribute to the operation and evolution of ECMWF’s product generation and archive services.
Main duties and key responsibilities
Operating ECMWF’s product generation and archive services, ensuring appropriate levels of quality of service and contributing to their planning and evolution
Managing users in accessing data, such as TIGGE/S2S, through ECMWF’s product generation and archive services
Supporting users in storing data in ECMWF’s long-term archive
Contributing to ECMWF’s Data Governance process, to improve the accessibility and international exchange of ECMWF data and products
Participating in the support of ECMWF’s operational systems, including 24x7 on-call support

As the Senior Analyst, he or she will be responsible for leading some the above activities, including the technical management to bring projects to a successful completion.

Qualifications and experience required

Education

A university degree, or equivalent, in a discipline related to computer science, physics, mathematics or engineering is required.

An advanced university degree is desirable for candidates considered for the senior role.

Experience

Experience with serving large scientific data sets, such as TIGGE/S2S, and communication with a range of data providers is essential.

Experience with environmental data format standards for international exchange, such as WMO GRIB, WMO BUFR, NetCDF

Experience in data governance, data modelling and digital data curation.

Experience in managing distributed applications and a good understanding of performance-related issues (memory, disk I/O, networking, etc.) would be advantageous.

Experience with automatic configuration management and deployment tools and Quality Assurance is desirable.

To be considered for the Senior role, candidates should demonstrate substantial experience of in some/all of the above.


Knowledge and skills (including language)

Strong level of programming with scripting languages, in particular Shell and/or Python on Linux systems.

Knowledge of other programming languages such as C and C++ would be an advantage.
Candidates must be able to work effectively in English and interviews will be conducted in English.

A good knowledge of one of the Centre’s other working languages (French or German) would be an advantage.

Other information
Grade remuneration
The successful candidate will be recruited at either the A2 or the A3 grades, according to the scales of the Co-ordinated Organisations.
These positions are assigned to the employment category STF-C and STF-PS as defined in the Staff Regulations.
STF-C
For the A2 grade, the minimum annual basic salary will be £59,228.40 net of tax.
For the A3 grade, the minimum annual basic salary will be £73,083.12 net of tax.
STF-PS
For the A2 grade, the minimum annual basic salary will be £59,228.40 net of tax.

Starting date: As soon as possible.
Length of contract for STF-C: Four years with the possibility of a further contract.
Length of contract for STF-PS: To 31 December 2020.
Location: The position will be based in the Reading area, in Berkshire, United Kingdom.
