Research & Development Seismologist (Experienced)

What Your Job Will Be Like

Are you passionate about your work and dream of utilizing state-of-the-art facilities to explore solutions? Do you want to join a dynamic team that helps tackle some of the most challenging issues facing our nation's security?

The Geophysics team is seeking a seismologist (R&D Geosciences Engineer) with interest and experience in the design and execution of seismic field campaigns, and the analysis of data collected therein. Seismic analysis efforts at Sandia have supported various national-security objectives, ranging from border security/surveillance, ground-based nuclear treaty verification, natural resource characterization, waste disposal monitoring, climate change, and site geologic characterization. We therefore seek individuals agile in the methods of both passive- and active-source seismology, with interest and/or experience in exploration scenarios ranging in length scale from the near-surface to regional scales.

On any given day, you may be called on to:
* Support existing geophysics department R&D efforts as means of maintaining and/or growing their technical diversity and expertise. Longer term, the expectation will be to provide expertise to Sandia mission area programs and ultimately help define, develop, and execute novel, high-impact, cross- disciplinary team efforts within them that advance the state of the art. This will be accomplished by pursuing funding opportunities via a competitive internal laboratory-directed research and development (LDRD) proposal process and competitive proposal processes for both internal and external sponsors within Sandia's mission area program portfolio
* Increase both Sandia's and their own impact and standing in these programs by producing high-quality results, which can include limited-distribution deliverables, publications in peer-reviewed journals, patents, conference presentations, reports, etc., depending on sponsor requirements
* Perform the work according to Sandia values, which include serving national needs, delivering with excellence, respect for others, teaming, and scientific integrity.
Qualifications We Require

You have the following:
* Bachelor's degree in a relevant STEM discipline and a PhD degree in Geophysics, or closely-related discipline
* Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance.
Qualifications We Desire

You also have one, or more, of the following:
* Demonstrated research experience in network seismology and infrasound methods, such as signal enhancement (filtering, array processing, etc.), signal detection, signal association (event building), event location, magnitude estimation, event discrimination, waveform correlation
* Demonstrated experience in active-source seismic data processing methods, such as refraction processing and common-midpoint reflection processing methods
* Demonstrated ability and desire to conduct field work. This may require permitting, working for periods of time at remote field locations, installation and maintenance of sensors, using energetic sources (such as explosives, weight drops, and vibrators), and collaborating with a multidisciplinary team of scientists, engineers, laborers, and landowners.
About Our Team

The Geophysics Department at Sandia National Laboratories performs geophysics research and development in support of Sandia's mission as a national security laboratory. We apply our expertise to address national-level challenges in Sandia mission area programs, including nuclear explosion monitoring, energy exploration and resource characterization in support of national energy security, nuclear nonproliferation, defense, homeland security, and nuclear weapons. The department has a broad range of expertise in field seismology and modeling, subsurface characterization, seismic, electromagnetic, atmospheric acoustic and infrasound modeling, evaluation of seismic and infrasound sensors and systems, and the processing, analysis, and interpretation of all types of geophysical data. The department's technical work spans the spectrum from theoretical to applied and includes strong modeling, lab, field data collection, and analysis capabilities. The department serves as Sandia's resource for geophysics expertise.

Security Clearance

Position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level security clearance.

Sandia is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Applicants for employment must be able to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship. If you hold more than one citizenship (i.e., of the U.S. and another country), your ability to obtain a security clearance may be impacted.

Applicants offered employment with Sandia are subject to a federal background investigation to meet the requirements for access to classified information or matter if the duties of the position require a DOE security clearance. Substance abuse or illegal drug use, falsification of information, criminal activity, serious misconduct or other indicators of untrustworthiness can cause a clearance to be denied or terminated by DOE, resulting in the inability to perform the duties assigned and subsequent termination of employment.

EEO

All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, disability, or veteran status.
