What the Director, Diversity and Inclusion does

The Director, Diversity and Inclusion leads and expands AGU program efforts towards achieving AGU's vision of being recognized as a model organization for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion.

Reporting to the AGU Vice President for Ethics, Diversity and Inclusion, the Director will be responsible for leadership, strategic direction and management for the suite of AGU Diversity, Equity and Inclusion programming.

This position carries responsibilities for assuring proactive execution against that strategic plan, including extending the leadership of the AGU Ethics and Equity Center, and coordination with closely related AGU Talent Pool programming and AGU Ethics programming. The incumbent will also help secure and execute against several major external funding opportunities.

* Excellent written, verbal and interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate easily and effectively with scientists and researchers, AGU staff and high-level officials in both public and private settings.
* Strong organizational skills, as well as attention to detail and ability to manage complexity.
* Established track-record as positive collaborator within the organization, working with volunteer leaders, and in working with senior level external partners a must.
* Strong knowledge of measuring work performance and implementing improvement strategies to achieve greater success.
* Confidence and motivation to operate with independence and to take part in senior leadership efforts as needed.
* Ability to multitask under pressing deadlines.
* Ability to establish relationships with members of the press, public information officers and senior officials at partner organizations and institutions and scientists.
* Proficiency with Microsoft suite of products, including Excel and Word, as well as Adobe Creative Suite.
* Must be capable of exercising highest level of discretion on both internal and external confidential matters and conducting himself / herself with sensitivity to both political and personnel issues.

What the Director, Diversity and Inclusion brings to the team

* 10+ years with Master's degree; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
* Strong background in non-profit organizations, scientific ethics, and diversity, and inclusion leading practices strongly preferred.
* Experience successfully designing and executing public workshops, and scientific forums strongly preferred.
* Program management knowledge and expertise strongly preferred.
* Experience supervising, leading, mentoring, and developing others strongly preferred.
* Fundraising success and grant writing experience strongly preferred.
* Experience representing science organization programs in a variety of public and internal forums preferred.
