Postdoctoral position in Scaling up and Modelling of Net Greenhouse Gas Emissions from Agroecosystems

School of Environmental Sciences, University of Guelph, Guelph, ON, Canada

We are seeking candidates for a post‐doctoral fellowship with a focus on scaling up large datasets on soil processes and greenhouse gas emissions to identify climate-smart soil management practices. Research will involve use of data from long-term micrometeorological CO2 and N2O flux and soil weighing lysimeter experiments designed to identify practices that reduce net greenhouse gas emissions, while also minimizing other environmental impacts. These data will be used to calibrate and validate biogeochemical models (e.g. DayCent, DNDC) followed by simulation scenarios aimed at assessing the impact of climate-smart soil practices on carbon sequestration and greenhouse gas emissions for different regions of Canada. This research will be conducted within a collaborative program targeted at graduate student training and involving seven universities and collaborating partners form various sectors (e.g. industry, government) across Canada. The successful applicant will be expected to mentor to graduate students within this program and will have opportunities to connect to initiative for greenhouse gas reduction across the involved sectors.

Applicants must have a PhD awarded within the last four years in a relevant science or engineering program, with emphasis on atmospheric or soil science. Preference will be given to candidates with demonstrated experience conducting field research of soil/plant processes and/or surface-atmosphere exchange, ability to work with large datasets and a track record of peer-reviewed publications. The successful candidate will have ability to work independently, have excellent organizational and problem-solving skills, and programming ability in either Python, R, or Matlab. Capacity to lead substantial research and training activities and effectively communicate research results to wide audiences will be an asset.

This one‐year position will commence September 1, 2019, with opportunity for a one-year extension. Please submit: 1) a cover letter stating your motivation for applying to this position and research interest 2) curriculum vitae, and 3) copy of 1-2 publications or PhD thesis, and 4) contact information for up to three references to Dr. Claudia Wagner‐Riddle (cwagnerr at uoguelph.ca<mailto:cwagnerr at uoguelph.ca>) immediately. The position will be based at the University of Guelph situated in Guelph, Ontario, Canada. Applications will be reviewed as they are received. The positions will remain open until filled. We thank all applicants for their interest, however, only those individuals selected for an interview will be contacted.
