Job Description
Postdoc for NSF study of storm tide dependence on estuary and climate
changes
The Davidson Laboratory and Department of Civil, Environmental and Ocean
Engineering at Stevens Institute of Technology has a new postdoctoral
researcher position starting in fall 2019. Stevens is based in Hoboken, New
Jersey, ten minutes from Jersey City and New York City.

alse> A new project has been funded by the National Science Foundation's
Prevention of and Resilience Against Extreme Events (PREEVENTS), with the
overarching goal of revealing and contrasting the mechanisms by which
changes to estuary geometry and climate alter flood risk.
The successful candidate will create present-day, historical, and idealized
estuary models and study how a range of storm and landscape characteristics
influence storm tides. Dynamical parameters and simple models will be used
to help interpret the effects of historical alterations to topography,
bathymetry and wetland area. The project is a collaboration between Philip
Orton, Stefan Talke (Cal Poly), James Booth (City College of New York) and
Thomas Wahl (Central Florida), including additional related investigations
of unique historical tide gauge datasets from the past two centuries,
changes to storm characteristics caused by climate variability, and
application of advanced non-stationary univariate and multivariate
statistical models to assess how statistical properties respond to these
changes.
A PhD is required in physical oceanography, coastal engineering, or a
similar field, as are experience and publications using computational
hydrodynamic modeling (e.g. ROMS, FVCOM) and computer programming for data
analysis (e.g. Matlab, Python). The initial appointment is for two years,
with the second year conditional upon performance, and with possible
extension to a third year. The researcher will be responsible for working
with other scientists and graduate students to accomplish this research, to
manage the project meetings and a workshop, and to prepare peer-reviewed
publications. Opportunities to collaborate on proposals, advise students,
gain teaching experience, and build your own research program will be
encouraged.
Applicants should submit (in a single PDF) a cover letter stating their
relevant skills and career interests, a curriculum vitae, and contact
information for at least three references to Philip Orton,
<mailto:philip.orton at stevens.edu> philip.orton at stevens.edu. Please also
send the PDF of a writing sample published in a peer-review journal. Full
consideration will be given to applications received by July 14, 2019.
